When you write codes, you try to write for the all possible negative scenarios that you can think of, and the more time you spend coding (In my case it took me 7 years), you can easily identify the most negative scenarios being a coder rather than relying on QA (Most of the times, but exceptions are there). But to grasp these negative scenarios, you must lean on QA for becoming a more efficient coder. In my early days, I'd ponder extensively before coding, yet bugs would still arise, leaving me feeling like, "Why this Kolaveri di? 😫 " However, as time marched on, I realized those QA pointers were the secret sauce that transformed me into a self-proclaimed better coder. 😬 It's subjective, isn't it? In the early days, I began implementing Unit Testing for my code, rigorously testing each piece to ensure QA wouldn't find any bugs. And you know what happened after that? I delved deep into coding on edge cases, and for the past six years, I've relied solely on this principle whenever I code. While my code may not be 100% bug-free (yet!) 😅 , I hold onto the belief that aligning with QA speeds up the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC). It's a symbiotic relationship—working in harmony with QA, rather than against them, accelerates progress. And remember, if QA seems to be against you, don't panic; it's simply part of their organic nature. The next time you encounter a bug flagged by a QA, don't just react; embrace it. But today, I faced my greatest challenge yet: naming a variable. 😅 You’d think after years in the trenches, naming a variable would be a walk in the park, right? WRONG. It was a Herculean task. I sat there, staring at my screen, as if I were trying to name a newborn child. Potential Names Considered: 1. `x` – Too mysterious. 2. `data` – Vague and uninspiring. 3. `tempVariable` – Lazy, and my old coding professor would disown me. 4. `superImportantCustomerData123` – Accurate but a bit too verbose. Finally, after much contemplation and a few cups of coffee, I settled on `userProfileData`. A name that speaks of clarity, purpose, and the relentless pursuit of code readability. 🎉 Let this be a reminder: even the smallest tasks in coding require our utmost creativity and dedication. Been chatting about this with people and would like to read other points of view as well: how important are testing and reliability through a dedicated QA division for you? I personally believe (at the time of writing) that it's very beneficial to have a dedicated test engineering function handle a lot of your reliability testing. You want your software engineers to also stay on top of testing, but I don't believe they have the unbiased approach that someone who has not worked on that particular codebase has. Anecdotally, think how often engineers 'blame' other teams' code and are happy to raise a bug ticket when something up/down-stream affects them. That's what QA does to everyone, with benefits for everyone. The shift towards devaluing QA has led to buggier software (games being a wonderful example people can point fingers at very easily), in my opinion. But more and more companies keep getting rid of QA first, or paying QA less. It is disheartening to hear many amazing QA engineers say "I have to branch into classic frontend / backend engineering if I want a career". Am I missing something? Functional bugs raised by QA, don't imply that developers can't write Unit Tests for them. It is #CodeDoctorship level skills to identify one or more missing Unit Tests around functional test-revealed bugs. So #CodeDoctorship views QA reports not just as bugs exposed, but as feedback to write more missing Unit Tests.
