Hello Connections! I am glad to share that I attended a highly insightful online workshop on "Careers in Psychology" organized by "Offbeat Psychology" (an MSME registered organization) on September 29, 2024. The workshop kicked off by explaining the "symbol of psychology" and its significance, and then delved into the rising demand for psychology and mental health professionals. The session provided an in-depth understanding of various sub-fields of Psychologists such as clinical, digital, counselling, geriatric, organisational, health, forensic, architectural, travel, military, sports, neuropsychology, and relationship psychologist. We also discussed roles like psychotherapists, hypnotherapists, teachers, researchers, and career counsellors. One fascinating concept I came across for the first time was the "psychopreneur"—a blend of a psychologist and an entrepreneur! Additionally, the differences between counselors, psychologists, and therapists were clarified, helping me better grasp the nuances of each profession. The workshop concluded with an important discussion on the challenges faced by mental health professionals today. My latest research "Engaged teachers and well-being: the mediating role of burnout dimensions" has just been published with Taylor & Francis Group in Health Psychology and Behavioral Medicine. This study explored the mediating role of burnout dimensions in the relationship between work engagement and subjective well-being. The findings provide deeper insights into how burnout affects teachers' well-being, offering valuable guidance for designing training, prevention, and evaluation programs that address the complex nature of burnout. Why did you choose psychology? It’s a question I'm often asked. As far back as I can remember, I knew I wanted to be a psychologist. 💡 In elementary school, I envisioned myself as a school psychologist. By middle school, I aspired to be a guidance counselor, and in high school, a therapist. At just 12 years old, I read my first self-help book, "Change Your Brain, Change Your Life" by Dr. Daniel Amen. Personal development always fascinated me, and I became deeply curious about human behavior (particularly my own). I wanted to understand how to "hack" my mind and improve it. I found myself naturally drawn to listening to others' struggles and offering advice, guided by a deep sense of empathy and compassion. This combination led me down the path to behavioral science. Growing up, I faced my own share of mental health challenges. To cope, I sought out every resource I could on emotional healing. When I made it through to the other side, it became my mission to help others navigate their own journeys. I believe being of service to others is my purpose. I'm passionate about using my skills, experiences, and knowledge to help others feel less alone. ✨ Why did you choose your field? What inspired you to pursue your profession? Direction in your career as a psychologist requires clear goals. But when you're new to the industry it can be difficult because of how broad the profession is. So if you're stuck for inspiration, use a broad goal to get the ball rolling, then break this down into smaller goals. For example, start with a broad goal like: "Improve my understanding of trauma interventions" This can easily be broken down into smaller goals based on different approaches e.g. 1. Understand the ACT approach to trauma 2. Understand the CBT approach to trauma 3. Understand the EMDR approach to trauma Keep in mind that you don't have to spend 1000s of dollars on workshops to kick the learning off. Start reading, watching videos and if you want a more personal approach, book supervision with a psychologist skilled in the area of interest. #career #psychologist #learning

As a counseling psychologist, I owe a great debt of gratitude to the incredible teachers who have shaped not only my journey but the entire field of psychology. We stand on the shoulders of giants—visionaries who devoted their lives to 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘣𝘦𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘰𝘳, 𝘱𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘱𝘦𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘪𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴 𝘸𝘦 𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘰𝘥𝘢𝘺. 𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐮𝐝, even with controversial view about him, he with his revolutionary work on psychoanalysis, taught us the profound impact of the unconscious. 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐥 𝐑𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬, the father of person-centered therapy, showed us the power of 𝒆𝒎𝒑𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒚 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒖𝒏𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒈𝒂𝒓𝒅, changing how we connect with our clients. I am also deeply inspired by the work of 𝐕𝐢𝐤𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐥, who brought existentialism into therapy, reminding us of the human capacity for meaning and resilience, even in the darkest times. And let us not forget 𝐊𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧 𝐇𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲, whose work expanded the understanding of 𝒂𝒏𝒙𝒊𝒆𝒕𝒚 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒏𝒆𝒖𝒓𝒐𝒔𝒊𝒔, emphasizing the importance of culture and interpersonal relationships in mental health. Each of these pioneers—and many more—have acted as timeless teachers, providing us with the tools to guide, heal, and support others. On this Teacher’s Day, albeit a day late, I extend my heartfelt thanks to these incredible minds.
