𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆'𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗱𝗼? 🤔 Or an accent you know you can kinda do but maybe feel a little shaky in? Probably a decent amount, yeah? If you have agents who don't curate their auditions, or if you're on any of the P2P sites, you're probably seeing at least some auditions that don't feel like great fits. Most of the time, the auditions from your agent will specifically say that they want "Authentic accents only," and in that case, you can go ahead and delete that. But if they aren't...at least think about trying. (UNLESS...the audition is for an underrepresented group that should probably get their own shot at it) 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗩𝟭𝟮𝟯 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻: 1. A voice-of-God gig that wanted British English, and 2. A museum exhibit that wanted German dialect I did a play with a German accent before, and did British for 9 months straight when I was a princess at the Mall of America (long story), but because it's been so long since I've done either, I almost passed on both of them. Good thing I didn't, because I was shortlisted for both! 🤷🏻♀️ My acting teacher, Raye Birk, used to say "𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧 𝘰𝘶𝘵--𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘥𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶." I know a lot of folks are shy about auditioning for things on P2P because they fear getting dinged by the algorithm, but I go with the opposite view: If the audition only has 4 out of 25 slots full after it's been on there for more than 24 hours, it's because no one else is confident with their German accent either. In my proposal note, I even said "𝘐𝘵'𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘢 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘦 𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘐'𝘷𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘪𝘧 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘯 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘫𝘰𝘣, 𝘐'𝘭𝘭 𝘥𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘣𝘳𝘶𝘴𝘩 𝘶𝘱 𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘵!" Last year, casting a job for a friend of mine, I had originally posted that we were looking for an actor with a Middle Eastern accent...but actually, the clients truly wanted a neutral English sound. We cast the one person who didn't have any accent. (Also, he was REALLY good) 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗮 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗹𝗼𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻'𝘁. And if you REALLY don't have any dialect skills, I know Tom Antonellis coaches on accents and dialects, and so does my friend Foster Johns. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗻𝗼𝘁, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 (to listen to)? (𝘐'𝘭𝘭 𝘨𝘰 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵: 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘦'𝘴 𝘐𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘩🍀) #dialects #takeachance #auditions #voiceover #actorslife

😖 I kinda hate my accent 😖 I know. Not the best thing to admit as a voice actor but hear me out 👏 I'm an Aussie who grew up in Alabama and now lives in the UK, so I have a neutral Australian accent with an American influence and a bunch of British-isms mixed in for good measure 😅 But for all intents and purposes, I have a neutral Australian accent 🇦🇺 However most roles in games call for British or American accents, so on top of delivering a believable performance, I've got to keep my accents up to scratch and consistent 💪 And while I love my job -- including working in accents -- I'm sometimes envious of folks with a natural British or American accent... they can just focus on the character and the acting and let it flow, you know? 🤷♀️ What would be insanely cool is to see more roles open to any accent! Not just Australian, but the diverse accents the amazing global voice acting community has to offer 🌍 I mean, if your game is set in space or a fantasy world, does it really matter what accent they have? Are you relying on accented stereotypes to guide your characterisation? 🥸 Anyway, just a thought... and here's me celebrating my heritage as a kid, dressed as drover for Australian history day 🤠 NOTE: I should mention that American and British VAs get pulled up for their regional accents too, and often have to refine them to RP, SSBE, or General American. Be awesome if folks didn’t have to do that either 🙌 #voiceactor #voiceover #games #gamedevelopment #indiegame #indiedevs #gamedev #narrativedesign

ATTENTION ATTENTION ! YOUR ACCENT IS NOT THE PROBLEM! Let's debunk a myth together and put an end to accent anxieties! The truth is, your accent is not the hurdle, the deal breaker, the show stopper; it's your ARTICULATION that needs some attention! In the lead role as Eliza Doolittle in 'My Fair Lady,' I encountered the challenge of refining my speech. As an ESL actress, I transitioned from Turkish to a Cockney English accent back to standard English, mirroring the journey of Dr. Higgins with his marbles and pencils. Little did I know, this experience seamlessly wove into my work as a voice artist for Walt Disney and now to my clients. Imagine chatting with a Southern drawl, a Scottish brogue, or a lively Cockney twist. Pause; they're all speaking English. The enchantment lies in how they finesse their tongue, mouth, and articulate expressions. When I say your accent isn't the problem, believe me – I've navigated accents, melodies, and languages on both stage and screen. It's the finesse of articulation that steals the show, making communication an art form that transcends borders. Love your accent, embrace its uniqueness! It's the color on your canvas, never to be erased. Articulate right, pronounce correctly, and enunciate for clarity. After all, CHARISMA radiates from clarity. Own your accent with pride! 🗣️✨ I hope this message lands on ears that need to hear it. Your unique voice deserves recognition and celebration! There's a growing demand for voice actors, and interpreters can get in on the hype by honing their acting skills to offer translated narrations. Being able to perform a scene or a narration in more than one language is a massive bonus as it allows directors to adapt content to multiple languages without having to hire additional actors for each language. To get a feel for this kind of role, find an English video and listen to it. Then interpret it into your language, complete with emotions, etc. Think of yourself as less of an interpreter and more of an actor to really get the full effect. This guide can give you more insight: https://lnkd.in/eJpB8x88 #Interpreters #JobOpportunities #VoiceActing #FutureOfInterpreting

Ground your performance like the X-Men It's a phrase lots of people like to use with acting... 'Grounded'. And it's easy to understand why. Grounded means: → 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 → 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 → 𝗦𝘆𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰 It's quite literally anchored by psychological realism. Grounded in everyday reality. But beyond being simply 'naturalistic acting', what does that mean technically? A big thing - is finding thoughts. Taking the TIME to discover them in the moment. As soon as someone speaks fluidly and consistently without breaks, they appear more PROFESSIONAL, but also more 𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗗. Presented characters can still be 'grounded'. They can have a need to speak based in psychology. But the more the pace of delivery varies... The more it mirrors human thought. The more anchored it seems. Take the speech below. Magneto is speaking to a crowd of people - and he's a 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 speaker. But giving him time to find the right words grounds him. He can still go fast when he comes to his point. But it's not just a speech. This principle applies to any type of: • Voice acting • Acting • Presentation By all means know what you're saying and speak fluidly. But also know when to change gears. ----------------- 🎙 Need an assured, relatable voiceover? 🎙 Connect, DM me or check out my website link. 🎙 Schedule a virtual coffee about VO? https://lnkd.in/edi8UpkY 🔹 Check out my newsletter 'Lend Me Your Ears', covering acting/voice/media every week: https://lnkd.in/eV3eu_V5 🔹

Navigating Auditions: Embracing Opportunities and Honouring Authenticity As actors, we've all faced the dilemma of turning down auditions because of accent requirements. Whether it's an accent you don't do or one you feel uncertain about, it can be a tough call. Here are a few thoughts and strategies for handling these situations: 1. **Assess Your Skills Honestly**: If an audition requires an accent you can't confidently deliver, it's important to recognize your limits. Authenticity in representation matters, especially for underrepresented groups. However, if it's an accent you're close to mastering, consider investing time in practice. Every audition is a chance to grow. 2. **Leverage Your Network**: Don't hesitate to reach out to voice coaches or fellow actors who specialize in that accent. A quick session might boost your confidence and performance quality. 3. **Curate Your Submissions**: If you're receiving auditions through agents or P2P sites that don't feel like great fits, communicate with your agent. Clear guidelines can help them curate auditions better suited to your strengths. 4. **Try When Appropriate**: If the role doesn't explicitly require an "authentic accent" and it's within your range, give it a shot. Every audition is a learning experience and an opportunity to showcase your versatility. 5. **Respect Authentic Representation**: For roles representing underrepresented groups, step back if you don't authentically fit the profile. Advocate for authentic casting and support peers from those communities. Remember, each audition is a stepping stone, whether you book it or not. It's about growth, resilience, and authenticity. Share your experiences and strategies below – let's learn from each other! #Acting #Auditions #VoiceActing #Authenticity #ProfessionalGrowth

Question for my fellow voice actors: is there an app or a program where one could practice, and perfect, specific American accents? I’m currently producing an audiobook where the main character is from Chicago. My issue is that whenever I try to do his Chicago accent, it comes out a lot more Boston than I would like it to. Being that he’s such a pivotal character in the book, I definitely want to do his accent justice though. I’ve just yet to find anything that can help with specific American accents like that. So far, I’ve only been able to find apps that are designed to help people who’ve learned English as a second language with “The American accent,” which doesn’t make much sense to me, because there are a couple dozen different “American accents.” Lol. Does anyone have a good solution to this problem though? I’d really appreciate any and all the help I can get. Side note: if there is no such thing as an app to help actors and voiceover actors work on certain accents, we should definitely develop one!! I’m sure there’s enough talent here on LinkedIn for us to create something like this if we can work together. At least a website dedicated to helping voice actors with different accents. The YouTube videos can only go so far to help you develop a new accent to add to your repertoire. We could do something similar to the English accent apps, only have a menu, where you pick out which accent from which region or country that you need to learn, and voila! It’ll listen to how you’re doing the accent, and tell you what words and vowel sounds and stresses to put on to certain words. If someone wants to steal this idea from me and develops it, I say go for it just so I can use it! Lol. 😜
