This two-year-old was the first baby in two decades for Ichinono, a tiny, depopulated Japanese village overrun by life-sized puppets.   When I go to marriages etc. I ask my wife ‘where are the babies?’ (and kids) I recall how there used to be babies and kids all around in functions in the past-playing, crying, laughing , fighting… Now rare- you need to look for them with binocs.     TFR (Total fertility rate) is lowest in South Korea (0.7) In Seoul it’s 0.57   Japan 1.3-when I visited recently saw a lot of old people alone and fending for themselves.   China 1.09 (thanks to 1 child policy)   India is 2.01 less than 2.1 required for balanced population growth When I was born, it was 6!! (I had an aunt who had 16 ) Tamil Nadu 1.8 and Andhra 1.7 -that’s why the CM’s are saying have more babies (16 to be exact!)   South Korea is trying everything -parental leave allowances, time off for fathers, flexible employment timings and mass blind dating events China is going door to door finding out what couples are doing about making babies.   No interest in marriage ,dissenting astrologers, late marriages (many ladies don’t get married in the most productive age), late babies, lack of joint family to take care, Covid etc. affecting reproductive health, more divorces, more emigration -there are many reasons -coupled with increase in age -we are marching towards old people cities and towns -leading to more elder care and elder homes and may be more puppets and dogs.   Who will pay the pensions and who will make things?!   God help us. We have a baby crisis. We will end up with more ichinonos- may be called babynonos.
