Perplexity AI I was reminded of reading a small and intriguing article in the back of Newsweek magazine in the late 1990’s about a tiny start up with a strange name that meant 10 to the power of 100. Its name was Google. The New York Times ran an article a few days ago on a start up called Perplexity which delivers a revolutionary AI based approach to search: https://lnkd.in/exzZfhwH Even monopolies and oligopolies such as Alphabet and Facebook have to keep moving and evolving to face challenges to their business models. It is often the case that taking on monopolies is where the real opportunity lies. And, by the way, here is Perplexity’s answer as to how Google started off: ''Google started as a research project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin at Stanford University in 1996. Initially known as "BackRub," it was a search engine that used links to determine the importance of individual pages. In 1998, the company was officially launched as Google, with an initial investment of $100,000 from Sun co-founder Andy Bechtolsheim. The name "Google" is a play on the mathematical term "googol," which is 1 followed by 100 zeros. ✨ Interesting insights on the huge AI impact within Google's Q3 Earnings Call ✨ Just listened to Google’s Q3 2024 earnings, where they blew away estimates, and their focus on AI across all business units was pretty striking. Here are a few highlights that stood out to me from an AI perspective: 1. Infrastructure Focus: Sundar mentioned the importance of a full-stack AI approach and investing heavily in AI infrastructure, even if it means higher short-term costs. The logic is pretty straightforward: underinvesting in AI puts them (and any company) at a greater long-term risk. It’s a message that resonates, especially when thinking about the software platforms and new infrastructure needed to scale AI safely, like we’re doing at integrate.ai. Some companies may be fatally underestimating the competitive impact of taking a wait and see approach to AI. Google has seen the impact directly of moving too slow in productizing GenAI and are determined not to repeat it. 2. AI-Generated Code: Over 25% of Google’s new code is written by AI now. That’s a pretty major shift in a relatively short time. AI isn’t just assisting developers—it’s becoming part of the core process, helping them move faster and build better. It’s a strong signal of where things are going in terms of using AI to make real, tangible improvements to productivity. 3. GenAI in Google Cloud: More than 100 of Google Cloud’s top customers are actively using their generative AI tools. It’s clear that businesses are finding more sustained ways to “experiment with AI”, while also starting to see movement into real-world, scaled-up use cases. This mirrors what we’re seeing at integrate.ai—companies are figuring out how to collaborate safely and effectively on sensitive data without giving it up, enabling new AI use cases and paving a clear path to major productivity and innovation gains. 4. AI in Search: Google’s AI Overviews—these are the summaries that pop up at the top of search results—are seeing a lot of engagement, especially with younger users. It’s a good example of AI doing more than just automating tasks; it’s enhancing how people interact with information, which can build trust and make things a lot more user-friendly. 5. AI integration into major products: Sundar mentioned that now all 7 of Google's platforms and products with more than 2 billion users are using Gemini AI models. This creates an incredible surface area for Google to learn and improve their models in some of the most contextually rich applications and platforms. This cannot be underestimated in a world where context will be the world's new most valuable currency. There’s no doubt that AI is becoming foundational across the board, not just in theory but in practical, everyday applications.
