History was written 80 years ago today. Allied forces executed the largest military operation ever attempted, marking the start of the campaign to liberate northern Europe. The bravery of all those involved is almost impossible to comprehend and can never be understated. They were all heroes whose actions changed the course of WW2. We must never and will never forget them. D-Day was a vast undertaking involving 160,000 troops and paratroopers, 11,000 aircraft, and 7,000 vessels. It marked the start of Operation Overlord which ultimately prevailed, although at great cost. The challenges of our generation can sometimes seem huge but the events of 6th June 1944 truly puts things into perspective. Beyond the sheer bravery of all those involved, there are many reasons why D-Day succeeded and a number are worth reflecting on: - Planning - Teamwork - Resilience - Problem Solving - Flexibility - Communication        To compare to current day challenges is not to trivialise, but to remind ourselves of what is required to face into those challenges. “If you really want to do something…you’ll find a way. If don’t really want to do something…you’ll find an excuse.” I can’t believe that… It took an 8 yr old to remind me. As a young buck, I was told I would never get to achieve my dream of being a USAF pilot because 👎(pick a reason, there were a few). 🎯Needless to say I found a way, and became a USAF pilot. In the process, I grew miles because of those obstacles and those successes that followed. None of that would have been possible if… I had accepted “no” as an excuse…rather than the way to the right path. 💡As a result of those lessons, I’ve been able to pass those virtues on to my children, like my 8yr old, Sophia, who… Invested hours of sweat & pain so she could conquer her newly discovered Ninja course obstacle. (See the video). No matter what your struggle or goal is, Remember….the obstacle is the way. I challenge you to endeavor to find your path to “the way”, instead of finding an excuse to avoid it. As we approach Armed Forces Day in the UK, I wanted to reflect on the mutual benefit of hiring #veterans as an integral part of any D&I recruitment program, especially as it relates to #socialmobility. The British Army recruits from some of the most deprived areas of the UK. Many Service Personnel are from the nation’s poorest families and a large proportion of them have GCSE results far below the expected average for their demographic. The Armed Forces takes these young people and develops them to be highly adaptable, to plan, to prioritise, to innovate, to think critically and to be decisive. It engenders a competitive spirit, an esprit de corps and a commitment to integrity and loyalty. It trains them to operate far from the comforts of home, in the world’s most inhospitable, complex environments and to face adversity with selflessness and a deep-rooted sense of service. The result is some of the most impressive leaders and technical experts that I have ever had the honour to work with. In my corporate experience, it has been the former “Toms” in the Parachute Regiment, Privates in the Intelligence Corp, Gunners, Guardsmen and Combat Engineers (you know who you are) who have excelled far beyond many of their peers. None of the veterans that I know are looking for an unfair advantage but they do want the validity of their service and experience, sometimes in lieu of a formal education, to be recognised by potential employers. #armedforcesday #armedforces #socialmobility #BritishArmy

A whole Soldier approach- that’s H2F! Integral to that approach is the Spiritual Readiness component- the strength of self and soul that comes from knowing your life’s purpose, pursuing it with integrity and integrating that with the people around you. For people of faith, their religious virtues can drive SR. For people who are not religious, strong ethical reasoning can drive it. Either way, positive SR thrives on forgiving self and others, and on thankfulness.
