In a sports high-performance environment (for example in an #IPL team), there are 2 people who matter the most apart from the coaching staff!
1) Head #Physio: The person who keeps the entire Sports Science team in sync!
2) Team #Manager: The person who keeps the entire team, management and owners in sync!
If these two people in a team aren't upto the mark, the team will never function well!
Agreed?

I completely agree Sambit. These two roles are essential for a high-performance team’s success. I’m curious to know your thoughts on the ideal profile and education for each: what kind of experience and training do you consider crucial for each role?

Now the 2024 Major League Soccer season is over support teams all over the country will be working on plans to make improvements to hit the ground running for the 2025 season! 📍🗺️🧭📈
A key concept for me is to create alignment across each department with each member of the team understanding the role they play in within the organisations objectives to achieve the understand the ultimate goal:
Supporting players and technical staff to increase on field success! 🏆🥇⚽️
My advice to support teams is to use this time to establish/ re- establish a common departmental vision outlining key performance goals for the coming season all the while keeping the on field philosophy and the club’s long-term objectives at the heart. ❤️⚽️📈
Whether we are talking about an individual department, entire support team or club wide a common goal only strengthens understanding promoting clarity and alignment driving a culture of shared accountability.
A key concept for sowing the seeds in the ongoing pursuit for high performance excellence. 📈🌱🪻

❓ What’s one lesson from sports that applies to your work?
I think a lot of my best traits have come from my involvement in team sports (more specifically football) since I was young. A lot of the skills I have picked up from football have been transferrable and I now find myself using them in my current role at Convergence Group, such as:
🤝 Teamwork: In a football team everyone has a role from organising the defensive line to taking set pieces; it is no different in a business, everyone has a role to play, and its the job of the leader to make sure the best people are in place to do their role.
🐛 🦋 Adaptability: Sometimes the 4-3-3 has to become a 4-4-2, great teams, sports or otherwise, know when to make this change and how to do so successfully.
🗺️ Strategy: To win you need to be able to plan, execute and improve. And winning is what a teams are set out to do, whether that is to lift a trophy or expand your market share.
💬 What parallels do you see between sports and your industry? I’d love to hear your perspective.

🔎 How much do we really know about the people we work with? And does it matter?
As someone who has spent years in both the business world and on the football field, I’m continually struck by the lessons sport can offer us in the workplace. Watching the PSV team thrive this season under Peter Bosz reminded me of the power of connection and team dynamics—how every player knows both their strengths and how to make space for others to shine. 🌍
Bosz’s approach, prioritising clear roles and unbreakable trust, resonates because of its simplicity: successful teams know themselves well, and that’s what lets them support each other effectively. From my own years coaching and leading teams, I've come to see how self-awareness and a focus on relationships foster unity! Just like Bosz, who leads PSV to create a “numerical advantage” on the pitch by harnessing each player’s awareness of their role, I believe that true strength lies in understanding ourselves and each other deeply. Bosz’s squad keeps high defensive lines and prioritises communication, creating pressure and unity across the field.
We recently had the chance to explore this idea with PSV’s players Noa Lang, Sergiño Dest, and Ismael Saibari in a fun “Teammate Trivia” challenge. Watching them test how well they really know each other was fun and reminded me that knowing who you are working with can be as crucial as knowing what you are working toward.
In the upcoming period, I’ll be sharing insights inspired by top sports teams, exploring what their stories can teach us about leadership, collaboration, and resilience in business. I’d love to hear your thoughts along the way—how have sports taught you about work or life? Let's start the conversation and learn both from the sport and each other.

Andy Frisella:
"As a leader, your job is to set your team up with the best chance to win.
Period.
This is just as true in business as it is in sports.
If you're competing to win...
You need to put the best players in the game.
Not the players that have been on the team the longest.
Not the players you like the most.
Not the players that are the "nicest.”
The best players.
I see a lot of companies get their ass beat because they fail to understand this concept.
Instead of promoting and giving opportunities to the highest performing players on their team...
They give it to someone based on reasons that have 0 relevance to the success of the team and mission.
All this does is communicate to the rest of the team that the results they produce don't matter which breeds a culture of complacency and resentment.
Even if you don't lead a team or run a business...
This concept still applies to you.
If you want to progress your career and play in the game...
You have to be undeniably great at what you do.
UNQUESTIONABLY.
UNDENIABLY.
That includes being better than everyone you're in competition with.
So what's it going to be?
Only you can decide whether you're playing in the game...
...or sitting on the bench.
Either way ... the best players will play.
Always!"

Game state – factors that include whether a team is winning, drawing or losing, or down to 10 men – can dictate how a team plays in a given match. By isolating every team’s expected goals numbers based on game state, we can get a better sense of how they respond when taking the lead or falling behind.
Which sides are content to play it safe while the scores are level? When leading, do teams sit back and try to hold on to what they have, or do they look to extend their lead?

“You’ve got to play with the team you have”
A colleague from a sporting background said that to me recently, but it’s a statement that’s equally applicable to business.
In sport, a good manager will aim to build a balanced team with a range of skills and experience, but on the day of the match, some will be injured, some may not be on top of their form, and some just may not be available. But you’ve gotta look at the opposition, look at who’s available on the day, and put your best foot forward to meet the day’s challenge.
Same in business. We need to look ahead and envision the team we’d like to have in a year or two, and start working towards that structure tomorrow. But today, to meet the challenges facing us, we need to look at who’s available right now, look at their skills and experience, and put a team together to win the match.
“Plan for tomorrow, play for today!”

As a big sports fan, I've enjoyed watching the recent EPL's nail-biting finish, the NBA finals 🏀 , the NRL State of Origin series 🏉 , and now Euro 2024 🏆
The teamwork, strategy, and passion displayed by these athletes remind me of principles we can apply to our work as well. In any team, whether on the field or in the office, our strength lies in collaboration and continuous growth.
Building trust and unity within a team requires a transparent environment where everyone's voice is heard and respected. Also success isn't just about technical skills. There's no substitute for hard work, passion, and perseverance!
Here’s a video of my son's local rugby team. Watching these young men support each other and grow together is a powerful reminder of what we can achieve with the right mindset and teamwork 💪 .
By investing in our team's growth and fostering an inclusive environment, we set ourselves up for long-term success. Remember, in both sports and business, "talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships." #MichaelJordan.

- **Strategic Planning:** Just like Puzz pushing forward, having a clear strategy is essential.
- **Adaptability:** Foxy's quick reaction shows the importance of adapting to the unexpected.
- **Team Coordination:** Texture and Meteor exemplify teamwork, even in the toughest spots.
