We are pleased to see continued commitments to growing Ontario’s high-productivity industries. We applaud the new investments in Ontario’s manufacturing revival – critical to the province’s long-term prosperity – as well as the expansion of the Invest Ontario Fund, which will allow Ontario to compete for high-value business investments. While affordability is a key concern for governments at all levels, we must stay laser-focused on our future economic prosperity. Rather than providing cash rebates, we would have preferred to see even greater investment in new and modernized productive capacity that would support long-term increases in our province’s standard of living. Finally, we commend the government for continued forward momentum on infrastructure projects needed to accommodate Ontario’s population growth. The long-term benefits of these projects—ranging from transportation to energy—will pay dividends for decades, ensuring Ontario remains a competitive place to do business. https://lnkd.in/giwekFm4

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (#OECD) now predicts that Canada will be the #poorest performing advanced #economy in the world for the next 35 years if it continues on its present path. Under #PrimeMinisterJustinTrudeau, Canada’s per capita average income has increased by three per cent, from $54,154 in 2016, to $55,863 in 2022. In a 2023 media release from the @ontariocofc, the OCC shares that, ‘The Indigenous economy is strong and growing. Indigenous businesses contribute nearly $50 billion annually to Canada’s GDP, and there are over 75,000 Indigenous-owned businesses and entrepreneurs in Canada.’ Indigenous communities possess unique knowledge and perspectives that can significantly contribute to the overall economic landscape. When non-Indigenous finance leaders engage with Indigenous counterparts, they gain a deeper understanding of cultural values and sustainable practices that can lead to more effective business models. This exchange of ideas promotes inclusivity and drives economic reconciliation, benefiting both parties and the broader economy. As Canada moves towards a more equitable future, the collaboration between these finance leaders becomes increasingly vital. By learning from one another, they can address historical disparities and create a more resilient economic framework. Together, they can pave the way for a prosperous future that honours Indigenous contributions while fostering economic growth for all Canadians. Judge policies by their results not intentions. Canada's federal government has embarked on demand side policies that are punitive, particularly against the middle class, whom it purportedly champions, and the working class, which is quickly withering away into a permanent underclass that will be forever reliant on handouts under the rubric of creating a "Just Society" which was the intention of a previous ideological vintage. Imagine the poverty of imagination to not boldly promote supply side policies that would encourage risk taking, entrepreneurship, venture capital, and philanthropy -- all of which the country needs significantly more of-- in lieu of the generally unpopular budget that was recently tabled.

Economic Growth is part of the Governments plan but according to NIESR public investment needs to be doubled to 5% of national income to fund transport, housing, education and skills and boost productivity to achieve the growth rates that Kier Starmer suggested during his election campaign. Yesterday was budget day in Canada. And there's been a lot of talk about what we need -- and don't need -- to ensure long-term economic prosperity. As many economists, I'm concerned about our lack of investment in R&D, our flagging productivity and our constant erosion in economic competitiveness. I'm concerned that we are no longer one of the "happiest countries" in the world -- especially not for young people. But my take in today's The Globe and Mail opinion piece points to something in this country that I believe is holding us back. And it may surprise you. I'd love your comments! Again, effective communication with clarity is a very good policy by the new United Kingdom Government. But we must not forget. While effective communication to Plc's is admirable. The fuel of Great British Business are the 1,000's of SME's that operate in the UK. We must communicate effectively with these as these are the most important commercial entities. We must also bring back the balance of UKPLC's balance sheet. We must strive for a balanced economy that isn't too reliant on one particular industry. Great Britain is not a developing economy. Our economy is consolidating, with a smaller number of investors holding a larger share of Canada's wealth, financial clout and political power.   We welcome Robin Shaban, PhD, a leading voice on Canadian competition policy and law, as a Social Capital Partners Fellow. Robin Shaban is an economist, Associate Partner at Deetken Insight and Co-Founder and Chair of the Canadian Anti-Monopoly Project. They work on Canadian competition policy and law, and its intersection with economic, social and cultural inclusion. Competition law in Canada was written to protect big business. It has been neither pro-consumer nor, ironically, pro-competition. Robin is part of a small group of ambitious Canadian thinkers who advocated for change and helped secure reforms to our competition laws. As a fellow, Robin will be working to create an economy where everyone has the opportunity to be prosperous.   “Robin helps us understand how the Canadian economy works and for whom,” says SCP CEO Matthew Mendelsohn. “Entrepreneurs need to be able to enter and disrupt markets. Smaller businesses need to be able to compete on a level playing field.
