Forbes recently released their annual 'World's 100 Most Powerful Women' list for 2023 and its a tangible demonstration of the value, wisdom, and leadership impact of women in midlife and beyond. SEVENTY NINE PERCENT of those listed are 50+ years of age: - 37 are 50-59 yo - 33 are 60-69 yo - 8 are 70-79 yo; and - 1 is 80. Incredible women, doing important things, in a broad range of domains. I look forward to seeing the numbers grow in the coming years and decades, especially the 70+ and 80+ bands, as women stay working and making an impact for MUCH longer in organisations, communities and societies the world over. Far from fading quietly into the background, we're going to become more visible, more vocal, and more empowered DESPITE the tyranny of #genderedageism. Navigating our midlife turning points and being part of a community that supports, encourages, and celebrates powerful ageing and impactful leadership in the second half will be critical. While navigating through this environment, I've encountered challenges that pushed me out of my comfort zone. Despite moments of uncertainty, I've embraced these experiences as opportunities for personal growth. I find satisfaction in confronting uncomfortable situations head-on, knowing that each encounter contributes to my development and resilience. In the past few years, it's been noticeable and encouraging: more women have been making their way into top leadership positions in US companies. But a recent report from S&P Global suggests that something has changed - and not for the better. For the first time in over twenty years, there are fewer women in C-suite roles compared to last year. And beyond that, the overall progress of women advancing into senior positions has slowed down significantly. It's the slowest it's been in over a decade. Less than 1% of agencies are run by women. And despite this being a shocking statistic, I can’t help but wonder, why? In my time in business, I have come across so many amazing female creatives and leaders, people who are really paving the way for women in business. And we owe it to the next generation of female creatives to show them that what they want in life is not unachievable. As a business owner and a mother, I believe that I am better in each role for having the ability to do both. There are things I have learnt from being a business owner that make me a better mother, and things I’ve learnt from being a mother that make me a better business owner. But feels so disappointing in this day and age that our female leaders are still underrepresented. We need to do more to uplift our female creatives to go for it and start that business despite the odds. Women can have it all, they just need the right support system and representation to believe they can.

I recently shared my thoughts about the gender gap in the venture capital space, and so when I saw a recent article by Fortune acknowledging this issue I was intrigued. “The latest Fortune 500 list is out, and although much has changed, one thing remains the same: the rate of companies with women CEOs hasn’t budged.” That means 10.4% of Fortune 500 companies are led by women—exactly the same as last year. Also interesting to note is that when it comes to leadership led by black women, that number shrinks to less than half a percent. Does this make sense in 2024?
