How many times do you think a surfacing contractor when asked if something needs resurfacing will say yes on-site going with their own professional opinion? How many times will an asset owner/ maintainer put off doing work to get a few more years out of what’s already there to keep costs down? You can see both sides of the argument but what is the solution? Serfis Construction and Engineering Ltd were asked by Neary Rail if the platform access ramp needed resurfacing or surface treatment at Network Rails Stalybridge Station, my initial impression on site was it potentially wouldn’t provide the required level of skid resistance and generally needed doing as it was reaching the end of its life expectancy but how conclusive was my opinion? We needed some conclusive evidence to support the claim that resurfacing was required in the interest of Northern to keep its passagengers from slipping on the existing surface. The supporting evidence was captured by team at Meon who were brought in to independently undertake a pendulum test to determine the skid resistance of the ramps surface and provide an unbiased report into its condition. With a thorough analysis carried out by Meons site engineer Bongwe Mhlanga and a conclusive report there was no denying it needed resurfacing. The work has now been completed, open to the stations users and this is a great example of how we are executing our client first philosophy regardless of the size of the project.
