In this episode, we delve into the critical subject of Superfund sites and a groundbreaking new announcement from the EPA concerning the ubiquitous and persistent group of substances known as PFAS. We unpack the implications of these so-called "forever chemicals" being now listed under CERCLA (the Superfund statute) and the far-reaching effects of this on environmental safety, public health, and property ownership. Stay tuned as we navigate through the complexities of PFAS management, the new EPA regulations, and the challenges facing environmental consultants, property owners, and the general public. Dive into the future of water quality and environmental protection with David’s insightful analysis! “Is EPA Method 1633 on the Horizon for Clean Water Act Promulgation?” is our latest PFAS blog post from {{linkedin_mention(urn:li:person:-3XOiDeM0L|David Blye)}}, Senior Principal Chemist. David explores the rapid advancements in PFAS regulations and the recommendation for US EPA Method 1633 to measure PFAS in non-drinking water. Despite the urgency, recent discussions with the US EPA suggest that Method 1633 may not be proposed for promulgation before the end of 2024. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eaviYwgq #CleanWaterAct #PFAS #EPAMethod1633

Check out some of the research we're doing!
The goal of the Great Lakes Sediment Surveillance Program, a massive effort funded by the Environmental Protection Agency and led by NRRI, is to understand the extent of contamination in the lakes – from legacy chemicals to emerging pollutants – and how they move through the system. NRRI’s early data analyses show surprising concentrations in the deep middle of lake, not just near shore. https://lnkd.in/ehXnQrpN

Assemblymember Deborah Glick: Municipal WWTPs are not equipped to remove PFAS chemicals. In addition, please include leachate as one of the ways of delivering highly concentrated toxic chemicals to WWTPs. https://lnkd.in/ev5JvBDP "The Leachate Loophole involves multiple environmental laws, including those that cover solid waste, surface water, and drinking water. Modern landfills must take extensive measures to contain leachate in order to protect neighboring groundwater and streams. Yet, once this leachate is collected, it is common practice to send it to municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) for disposal. These facilities are not required to remove the harmful substances that are present in leachate, and they are not equipped to do so, even where they discharge into drinking water sources. The burden to remove harmful chemicals is placed on the drinking water treatment plants that draw from these waters, whose operators may not be aware that neighboring WWTPs are accepting leachate. New York State is planning to develop new leachate regulations through “rulemaking”. Rulemaking is the policy-making process for Executive and Independent agencies of the government. Agencies use this process to develop and issue Rules (also referred to as “regulations). It will provide the public the opportunity to act."
