Hiring the right sales person can be a significant challenge when starting a sales program. Being swayed by a salesperson's past success is common, especially without experience in recruiting for sales roles. Hiring the wrong person can lead to lost productivity and turnover costs. #Sales #Recruiting #BusinessTips

OK - So you’re hiring a sales person that needs to “hit the ground running” as you don’t have the resources to hand hold. You make sure to bring on somebody with experience selling to your target buyer. You make the hire, you’re excited about them. You check in at the end of their first week. Which panics you more?!? Option A) There was a pretty big typo in an email they sent to a prospective customer? Option B) They haven’t reached out to any prospective customers yet? These are my FAVORITE types of questions, as they get to the heart of our fears. If we can name, define and unpack what we're worried about - we can mitigate and test for it in our process. These aren't things we want to find out later on. Let's hire the right people the first time. You with me?! I know y’all are hiring sales folks right not so 2025 is HUGE. Which option is scarier to you? What metric would have you second guessing that hire? #NoWrongAnswers #JustLearning #DefiningTalent

#hiring more #sales reps is rarely the answer to growing your business. I'm asked to assess a sales team about 15 times a year. These sales teams are generally successful, but their leader recognizes that more could be accomplished. The companies are financially sound, with plenty of cash to invest in sales growth. So what's the problem with doubling down on what's working and hiring more salespeople? It doesn't scale. It can create linear growth, but not geometric growth. Many of you are reading this and realizing it's happening in your business. So if hiring more reps isn't the answer, then what's the secret? Better support for the reps you've already hired. As your sales team becomes more successful, they have more orders, customers, and administrative responsibilities. Processing orders, responding to customers, and completing reports are important work, but it's not sales and should be done by other people and technology--not salespeople. Your best salespeople are expensive. They should be doing the work of creating more customers. But unfortunately, their previous success has them doing things that aren't growing your company. Fix this. Don't hire more salespeople.

As a founder, hiring your first sales rep is a pivotal moment. It's the bridge between your initial traction and scalable growth. But it's also fraught with risk. Here's how to nail this critical hire: 1. Look for a builder, not just a closer Your first sales rep needs to be comfortable with ambiguity. They're not just selling - they're building your sales process from the ground up. 2. Prioritize industry knowledge At this stage, deep understanding of your market is more valuable than a rolodex of contacts. They need to speak your customers' language fluently. 3. Assess their ability to wear multiple hats Can they handle everything from prospecting to closing to customer success? In the early days, your sales rep might be your entire go-to-market team. 4. Test their resilience Early-stage sales are tough. Rejection is constant. Look for someone who can stay motivated without a big team around them. 5. Align on metrics Be crystal clear on what success looks like. Is it revenue? New logos? Close rate? Make sure you're on the same page from day one. Remember: This hire can make or break your growth trajectory. Take your time, run a rigorous process, and don't settle. What other traits do you think are crucial for an early sales hire?

If you are finding yourself losing sales reps to other companies, there are 2 questions that you can ask; "Why are so many companies poaching my reps?" or "Why are my reps poachable?" The first one is aligned to "victim mentality" where you are blaming the other company for your shortfalls with hiring and retaining talent. The second question is aligned to taking accountability. The minute that you blame others and outside factors is the minute that you give away your power. Taking accountability and asking what YOU can do better will lead you down a path of plugging the leaks instead of grabbing a bucket. Choose carefully. #B2B #Sales #hiring #recruiting

Everyone is a risk, especially in enterprise sales. You don't know if a sales rep is going to be successful until their butt is in the seat. No amount of interviewing or personality assessments can guarantee that someone is going to knock it out of the park after the training wheels come off and ramp is over. In 2020-2021 we ignored "risks" that we really red flags because everyone was desperate to grow. There are good risks and terrible risks: Good Risks ✅ Hiring Smart people WITHOUT industry experience ✅ Hiring non traditional backgrounds if they interview amazingly well ( depending on level of course) ✅ Listening to respected insiders who vouch for them ✅ Favoring preparedness and excitement over pedigree/degree Terrible Risks ❌ Showing up unprepared, drunk or wearing a Patriots jersey ❌ Running super late without notice or proof of saving kittens from a tree ❌ Can't articulate numbers and process well ❌ Found out this person got wasted at SKO, got into a fight with their SDR which resulted in a pregnant coworker getting hit in the face with a chair ( true story, unfortunately)
