Friday pondering before we end the week: Imagine a future where upgrading your phone doesn’t contribute to the growing e-waste pile but instead fosters a community that values longevity and responsible consumption. In just 12 years, global e-waste—the fastest growing waste stream—has nearly doubled, from 34 billion kg in 2010 to 62 billion kg in 2022. Simple E-waste Math: - 62 billion kg of e-waste = 1.55 million truck loads - 1.55 million trucks that carry 62 billion kg of e-waste would wrap around the Earth's Equator - It is equivalent to an average of 7.8 kg per capita per year - It is USD 91 billion in gross value based on the metals it contains - Only 22.3 per cent of this e-waste was formally collected and recycled in an environmentally sound manner. The "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" approach of the developed world is no longer sustainable, as e-waste continues to be dumped in the Global South despite international regulations. E-waste contains hazardous materials like lead, mercury, and cadmium, causing serious health risks for generations and long-term environmental damage. We must shift towards sustainable electronic consumption—prolonging device lifespans through timely repairs, refurbishments, and secure reselling. 📺 Watch this insightful video on how e-waste is poisoning Southeast Asia and the urgent need for change: How E-Waste Poisons Southeast Asia. Tech has a dirty secret - e-waste. Discarded electronics are full of toxic chemicals and heavy metals, which can harm human health and poison the land and waters, if not properly disposed of. Asia is the biggest generator of e-waste. And due to illegal imports, Southeast Asia is turning into an e-waste dumping ground. Thailand and Malaysia have found themselves on the receiving end of waste from Western nations. As the safe disposal of e-waste requires specialised processes and equipment, there is simply more e-waste than many countries can handle. Some experts have called this an e-waste timebomb, as regulations and education lag far behind the problem. But with growing consumerism, exemplified by the rush to purchase the latest mobile phone models, the e-waste conundrum may just keep piling up.

Did you know 🌴 plants have a super cool internal highway system? Unlike us animals, plants can’t just hop up and grab a bite to eat! But fear not, they’ve got a sneaky trick up their 🌱 leafy sleeves – a built-in transportation network! Here’s the lowdown: * Xylem: Think of this as the plant’s 💧water delivery system. These tiny tubes carry water and minerals absorbed by the roots all the way up to the 🌿 leaves, keeping the plant hydrated and nourished. 🌳 * Phloem: Now, imagine a sugar delivery 🛻truck! Phloem transports the delicious sugar made by the leaves (through ☀️photosynthesis) to all parts of the plant, giving it energy to grow and thrive. This amazing transportation system ensures every part of the plant gets the nutrients it needs to survive! #plantpower #plantscience #transportationinplants #xylem #phloem
