As we observe Black History Month, it is crucial to reflect on the profound contributions made by our elders in rebuilding the country, spanning various fields from nursing and transportation to art, music, and culture. However, the legacies of painful racism and scandals like Windrush persist in 2024, underscoring the ongoing struggle against systemic inequalities. Throughout history, the racial disparities faced by Black individuals within the justice system have been well-documented, highlighting the system's role in perpetuating racism and oppression. As Alicia Garza aptly stated, racism is a mechanism for certain groups to uphold power at the expense of others. This month serves as a time to honor achievements, acknowledge struggles, and recognize that the fight for justice and equality extends beyond a single month. It is imperative for all of us to dedicate ourselves to creating a future characterized by equality, peace, and respect for all, ensuring justice and fairness prevail. #BlackHistoryMonth #Equality #Justice #Inclusion

Today we remember Juneteenth - the emancipation of the last remaining enslaved Black people in America. It is a reflective time that represents freedom and reminds us that pursuit of equity is urgent and essential for all. We remain committed to a more equitable Omnicom because we know it changes our people, our business and society for the better. As advocates for inclusivity in our work, we also know the power of storytelling to foster change, drive understanding and share accountability. Wow, that hit me. I've been taught since a very young age to treat everyone equally and when we have to judge, to judge only by character. I always wondered how medical staff could attend to people only in accordance with that patient's medical insurance coverage as it would seem to go against the age-old pledge of "first do no harm". I do not work in the medical field and would never have imagined that medical staff would treat a patient differently based on whether their hair was done, or not. And if patients are treated differently for this, then I am sure other superficial aspects would be considered in their treatment as well. As in any other field, I believe that there are people who are caught up in dealing with people based on their own biases, but also that there are people who try to deal with others in a dignified way because they care. Either way, this was a good reminder for me to make sure that I take care to always see the person (whoever that may be) in front of me for the person that they are, and not allow any conscious or unconscious biases to creep in. For me, daily interactions with any person (or any living beings for that matter) should be based on the approach to "first do no harm" (Primum non nocere). Have you ever felt that you have been treated a certain way because of other people's biases? Have you ever slipped up on either a conscious or unconscious bias and treated someone else unfairly? What are you doing to improve how we deal with each other?
Racism in healthcare puts Black women’s lives at risk. In fact, only 5.7% of U.S. physicians are Black. And hair-based discrimination occurs everywhere from doctors' offices to schools. Still today, Black women face an uphill battle when wearing natural hairstyles. But studies show that doctor diversity saves lives! Not to mention, diversity training in medical school reduces racial bias and discrimination equips doctors with practical knowledge, and again, saves lives. ✏️Colbie Christian via X
