Can a conference influence real change? Yes. The National Innovative Communities Conference does, every year. In 2011, the city founders of Jurupa Valley attended our conference and left brimming with ideas to create a city that wasn’t just a place people were “from.” They wanted to integrate community and art, emotional and physical well-being, along with a unifying sense of pride in ownership. And from that inspiration, the first Healthy City in the Inland Empire was born. To this day, Healthy Jurupa Valley continues to embrace strategies and actions taken directly from the world's healthiest communities, places where people tend to live up to a hundred and suffer fewer chronic diseases. What kinds of things have they implemented that have shown real impacts? ✅ The Gardens and Markets team provides increased access to healthy food by connecting our community to food’s earthy origin. ✅ Team CREATE Inspires, develops, and enhances equitable opportunities that unify the communities of Jurupa Valley through artistic, creative, and recreational activities. ✅ The Community Prosperity Team builds a supportive and viable environment for business and entrepreneurship and building strength and prosperity in families. ✅ The Safety and Readiness Team engages the community with resources, education, and information on safety and emergency preparedness. ✅ Jurupa Youth United strives to build healthy and equitable communities through purposeful social advocacy and community engagement. ✅ Jurupa Valley Leaders in Action equips Jurupa Valley community members with the knowledge and resources available in their communities. Trigger warning: We need more Black & Brown Health & Social care entrepreneurs. - Black people are more likely to be sectioned - Black women are 4x more likely to die at child birth - Black teenagers are 50% more likely to have eating disorder symptoms Most Black people in the UK have experienced prejudice from healthcare professionals because of their ethnicity. This is why representation matters. I remember visiting a terminally ill family member in ICU , after taking an emergency flight home from my holiday. A healthcare professional noticed my wedding ring and said “I’m suprised your married to a black man - they usually run off with multiple women” 🙃 I had been there for 10 minutes, jet lagged and emotional - NEXT to my Ghanaian husband. I wasn’t even the patient. I have much worse examples than this and the stats say more words than I have time to share. As a director of a mixed/black led organisation, the glass ceiling sometimes just feels like it’s changing shape. Forming in ways of positive discrimination , tokenistic and at times - exploitative. That’s why the Health & Social Care Accelator Programme with Black South West Network is so important . Connecting with other similar businesses, validating our experiences , Inspiring each other to know our value, providing opportunities and networking with key stakeholders. It continues to create hope in a challenging environment. All entrepreneurs know how difficult it can be to be successful. With additional barriers (usually unseen to most) growing a business can make it even more difficult. For minority businesses: Find your circle. •Friends , businesses , mentors, allies - a community that understands what you are up against. Ask that person who you can learn from; for a coffee. Take all the support & knowledge you can get. For funders, big organisations, partners. policy makers and senior leaders : Please make a commitment to understand what it truly means to be an ally. •Learn, reflect, challenge and commit to supporting us. This will make a huge difference to change. We also need to celebrate the health care professionals who ahave and continue to be strong allies to the unheard. Including my White Welsh Mother, who has been a nurse for as long as I know. They are usually the unsung heroes - being our voices in privelaged spaces. One step at a time. And trust me when I say, every step counts. Thank you Black South West Network , Derek Tanner and Tutu for helping us learn how to continue to smash the status quo and to grow - so we can continue to help the communities who need us. Health support is a human right.
And that's a wrap for now! Our cohort of 14 organisations participated in a 6-week intensive Health & Social Care Accelerator programme between 11th June and 23rd July 2024. The programme facilitated not only key knowledge on supporting enterprise sustainability and growth but access to direct engagement with service commissioners and procurers. Want to find out more about the programme and what's next for our cohort? Check the programme page here: https://ow.ly/AKRW50SNV5N
