Proposing a New Concept in Logistics: Empathetic Logistics The Aftermath of the Pandemic Since the pandemic era began in 2021, our lives have changed in every aspect. We have become more sensitive not only to visible risks but also to invisible ones, and even to potential risks that we can't imagine. This heightened sensitivity in a world where rapid technological advancements continuously introduce new things has accelerated polarization. People who are aligned with certain interests or ideologies form groups that prioritize their own perspectives and directions, sometimes leading to extreme events such as wars. Looking at the current global situation, it is indeed a world filled with challenges. So, what role does logistics play in such times? Empathetic Logistics rather Environmental Logistics I would like to introduce the concept of "Empathetic Logistics." The key word here is empathy. Forward Logistics: Raw Materials → Products → Consumers Reverse Logistics: Consumers → Destination, Level Changes → Traders Environmental Logistics: All logistics related to recycled products To simplify, while the correctness of definitions is secondary, I want to focus on the key concept of empathy. I believe that empathetic logistics can bridge the polarized world. Even with numerous environmental policies, policies that lack empathy are ultimately just measures to avoid basic blame. I believe the primary goal should be resolving polarization. For instance, starting in the early 2000s, Europe implemented regulations requiring vehicle manufacturers to bear the costs of scrapping their vehicles. Companies are necessarily sensitive to the costs of each regulation because they are driven by profit. However, if there was a fundamental sense of empathy among everyone, such costs would be viewed as natural rather than burdensome—similar to how we naturally avoid making loud noises in public. Empathetic Logistics Certification The Empathetic Logistics Certification system differs significantly from previous systems. Traditional business evaluations involve quantitative assessments, scoring, and documentation. In contrast, empathetic logistics hinges on how much empathy is demonstrated. The certification is not about mandating empathy but recognizing voluntary efforts. Companies that propose joint logistics expansion plans, introduce environmental technologies in logistics equipment, or transition to eco-friendly transportation methods can receive empathetic logistics certification based on the empathy they garner. Empathy is something everyone around the world can contribute to. However, to ensure fairness rather than equality, the empathy index is adjusted by multiplying it with country-specific carbon emission variables. The ultimate goal is not merely to receive empathetic logistics certification but to unite everyone’s hearts through empathy.
