FOOD FOR THOUGHT 💭 ----------- India’s philanthropic landscape is rich with dedication and generosity. As seen in recent reports, incredible individuals like #Shiv Nadar and #Rohini Nilekani, among others, are directing millions toward education, healthcare, environmental sustainability, and more. 📈 The #Hurun #Philanthropy List even highlights a 55% increase in donations from two years ago, showcasing a powerful wave of giving. 🌊 Yet, after nine years in the development sector, I’ve realized there remains a gap in support for grassroots organizations and social impact institutions. 💡 Many essential changemakers work tirelessly on the frontlines, directly impacting communities and addressing specific local needs. However, these smaller organizations sometimes fade into the background, overshadowed by the larger institutions. Their deep, intensive impact often goes unnoticed, while resources continue to cycle primarily toward established, well-funded entities, making them even bigger. 🔄 This creates a kind of resource monopoly, where those who already have funding receive even more. Smaller organizations—those that focus on vertical, intensive growth rather than broad, extensive reach—are often left out of this cycle. They don’t get the big push needed to amplify their work, despite the profound, in-depth impact they bring to communities. 🌱 Imagine the change we could drive if more philanthropic resources reached these grassroots organizations. By investing directly in ground nonprofits, we can ensure that every rupee goes toward creating tangible, localized impact, empowering communities from within. 🤝 💬 What are your thoughts? How can we encourage more direct support for grassroots changemakers in India? The Indian Philanthropy Report 2024 by Bain & Company reveals a heartening trend in the nation's philanthropic landscape. The report indicates a remarkable growth in private philanthropic funding, especially from High-Net-Worth Individuals (HNIs) and Ultra-High-Net-Worth Individuals (UHNIs). Focus key highlights: ▶ Private philanthropy grew by 10% in FY 2023, reaching INR 1.2 lakh crore ($15 billion). ▶ Family philanthropy, including HNIs and UHNIs, saw a 15% growth, signaling a robust increase in charitable giving. ▶ Notably, UHNI giving surged by more than 60%, driven by concurrent donors. ▶ HNI/affluent giving also showed moderate growth of 7%, with HNIs and affluent individuals demonstrating a higher propensity to give than UHNIs (more than 0.7% of net worth vs. 0.1% for UHNIs). This surge in private funding is a testament to the growing commitment of India's wealthy to social causes. It's a clarion call for all stakeholders to contribute to a more equitable society. Did You Know? You Can Now Donate Like You Invest! Yes, you heard that right! Charitable organizations can now list themselves on Social Stock Exchanges (SSE) much like companies do on NSE and BSE, provided they meet certain eligibility requirements. This exciting development allows these organizations to access funding in a structured manner and ensures proper corporate governance. It also helps achieve philanthropic objectives by assuring donors that their contributions are being directed towards legitimate, well-organized entities. Key Benefits of SSE: - Enhanced Trust: Organizations will provide annual reports detailing fund usage, increasing transparency and donor confidence. - Access to Funding: Charitable organizations can tap into new funding sources. - Structured Governance: Ensures organizations maintain proper governance practices. However, this also means an increase in compliance requirements for charitable organizations. But this step by the government is crucial for achieving social objectives. In addition to the SSE, India also mandates Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) for companies, requiring them to allocate a portion of their profits to eligible social causes. These initiatives make India unique in its approach to achieving socio-economic equality. Let's embrace these changes and contribute to a more equitable society! #SocialStockExchange #CSR #CorporateGovernance #Philanthropy #Transparency #Funding #SocialImpact #India #listing #stockexchange

With Daan Utsav—India's festival of philanthropy—approaching in the first week of October, I felt inspired to reflect on the rich tradition of giving in our country. Celebrated around Gandhi Jayanti, this event highlights how the act of giving has evolved from ancient times to modern philanthropy, from simple charity to becoming a driving force for societal change. India’s culture of giving is ancient and profound. In the Bhagavad Gita, we find the verse, “One who enjoys abundance without sharing with others is indeed a thief,” which beautifully captures the moral responsibility of generosity. Stories like that of Karna from the Mahabharata, who gave away his natural armour, and Rishi Dadhichi, who sacrificed his life so his bones could forge a weapon for the gods, reflect our deep-rooted tradition of selflessness. Even in modern times, India’s philanthropic spirit endures. The Tata Group established the JN Tata Endowment in 1892, marking the beginning of structured philanthropy. After independence, foundations and trusts blossomed, focusing on building universities, research centres, and hospitals. While there was a slowdown for a time, the rise of India’s middle class over the last decade has reignited the movement, with over 100 million new donors emerging between 2009 and 2013. Retail giving, driven by everyday citizens, is thriving, with contributions reaching $4 billion in 2022. Corporate India has also embraced giving, especially with the introduction of the CSR Law in 2014, making it the first country to mandate corporate philanthropy. This resulted in over INR 15,602 crore in donations in FY 2023. Additionally, the launch of the Social Stock Exchange (SSE) offers a groundbreaking way for non-profits and social enterprises to raise funds transparently. In reflecting on this, a quote from the Rig Veda resonates with me: “The person who is always involved in good deeds, experiences incessant divine happiness.” Let's make giving a central part of India’s journey towards inclusive growth. Empowering philanthropy in the Indian landscape necessitates a robust approach to due diligence, as the country’s diverse socio-economic context presents unique challenges and opportunities for charitable giving. With thousands of NGOs operating across various sectors, from education to healthcare, the potential for impactful philanthropy is immense. By prioritizing due diligence, philanthropists can help foster a culture of accountability, thereby enhancing the overall efficacy of charitable efforts in India. At our organization, we offer comprehensive Due Diligence Services that extend to a meticulous examination and evaluation of societies, trusts, social enterprises, foundations, and institutions. Our team of experts conducts thorough assessments, providing insights into program execution, operations, governance, compliance, and financial practices. By connecting with us, you can navigate the complexities of the Indian philanthropic landscape with confidence, maximizing the impact of your contributions and fostering transparency and accountability in your charitable endeavors. Together, we can create lasting change and uplift communities across India.

"Philanthropy is more than charity; it is an investment in humanity's future. While charity offers immediate relief, philanthropy builds lasting solutions." Proud to see that this philosophy perfectly embodies HCLTech founder Shiv Nadar's monumental giving. He has once again topped the EdelGive Foundation EdelGive-Hurun India Philanthropy List 2024 with an extraordinary contribution of ₹2,153 crore (around $255 million). To put this in perspective, it is a daily contribution of 5.9 crore (around $ 700 K). He is followed by Mukesh Ambani at ₹407 crore (around $48 million). Shiv Nadar's contribution is more than 5 times that of India's richest man, Mukesh Ambani! It showcases Nadar's exceptional commitment to social transformation. Shiv Nadar Foundation focusses on: • Education transformation • Arts & Cultural preservation • Building sustainable institutions What sets Shiv Nadar's philanthropy apart is its transformative vision. While charity feeds a man for a day, the focus on education and sustainable institutions from Shiv Nadar Foundation empowers generations to feed themselves forever. #superchargingprogress

The Dasra Philanthropy Forum (DPF), now in its 10th year, has come a long way. What began as our first philanthropy convening in New York City has evolved into a powerful platform where global philanthropists can learn about the incredible work nonprofits are doing in India. It’s a space to meet, learn, collaborate, engage in impactful giving, and share knowledge. Each DPF has uniquely showcased the remarkable work happening in India. From empowering adolescent girls and improving maternal and child health to tackling water, sanitation, and hygiene issues, and spotlighting the power of collaborations, DPFs have highlighted innovative solutions and the efforts of India’s top nonprofit organizations while encouraging better giving practices. From #NewYorkCity to #London, #Stanford, #Houston, #Bangalore, #Ahmedabad, and #PaloAlto, we’ve brought together philanthropists, nonprofit leaders, government officials, and sector experts to learn about high-impact interventions and collaborate on solving some of India’s most urgent social development problems. These gatherings have been instrumental in helping global donors and leaders truly understand the challenges and opportunities in India. It’s where their giving can be game-changing and where they can learn approaches to implement in their philanthropic efforts elsewhere. Forums like DPF are crucial as they provide a platform for the Indian voice on the global stage, especially during important events like #UNGA week. This timing underscores our commitment to bringing India’s perspective to global discussions and ensuring that the efforts and innovations from India are recognized and integrated into broader global strategies. Our hope is for DPF to become a movement for strategic #philanthropy that inspires the global donor community to take meaningful action. It’s a place to learn about diverse and innovative models for social change in India and apply these approaches to other contexts. It’s where collaboration and community are at the heart of every discussion, and where the impact is felt far beyond the event itself. We are excited to continue this journey of learning and giving and invite philanthropists from around the world and the US who are passionate about making a difference in India and beyond to join us at DPF and be part of this incredible community.
