Call for Proposals: 2025 International Conference of the Philippine Political Science Association (PPSA) Changes and (Dis)Continuities Baguio City | 23-24 May 2025 Politics and our political realities are in constant flux around the world. Changes can happen physically, within observable boundaries and cognitively as the understanding and appreciation of the political evolves. Changes can be transformative, but they can also result in the discontinuation of a political phenomenon and signal continuity in some respects. As societies and polities face changes daily, it becomes incumbent upon political scientists, social science scholars, practitioners, and other interested parties to revisit and help us understand these changes. Deadlines and Dates to Remember Call for Proposals (Paper and Panels): 8 November 2024 Deadline for Submission of Abstracts: 15 January 2025 Release of Acceptance Notices: 28 February 2025 Confirmation of Participation and Registration of Presenters: 15 March 2025 Deadline of Payment for Participants: 15 April 2025 Release of Book of Abstracts: 30 April 2025 Those interested in presenting or convening panels may submit their proposals through our website: https://lnkd.in/grt9BgRu

I am thrilled to share that my paper, co-authored with Simone Cremaschi, Marco Cappelluti, and Catherine E. de Vries, is now published in the American Journal of Political Science. In this study, we show that reduced access to public services (public service deprivation) helps to explain the success of the far right in Italy. The article is open access and you can download it by clicking on this link: https://lnkd.in/e7Ut_gn2

The role of citizens' juries in supporting the successful implementation of planning policies, including national initiatives like the National Planning Framework, is discussed in a new paper by Edmond Grace, published by the Institute of International and European Affairs. In his paper, Grace argues that these juries, at both regional and national levels, could deliver better public understanding and acceptance of planning policies and lead to more balanced and sustainable development at all levels of society. #iieapublications #EUAffairs #citizensjuries You can read more here: https://lnkd.in/eKKvEgRr

A multi-method approach to present and analyze the institutional phenomenon of jurisdictional privilege (foro privilegiado). The results were presented at the 2023 IPSA World Congress of Political Science (Buenos Aires) by International Political Science Association (IPSA) - with Tassiana Oliveira e Ana Tereza Duarte Lima de Barros. Disponível em: https://lnkd.in/eVisnMFP First of all, exploratory and descriptive comparative research was carried out from Latin American constitutional texts to identify where jurisdictional privileges are present and their respective amounts. Then, a quantitative analysis applied statistical tests to the variables included in the research database, to check possible correlations between institutional quality indexes and the variation in the number of representative categories of political authorities benefiting from the privilege of jurisdiction. Finally, this work performed a qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) to describe the logical relationship between the variables in terms of necessary and sufficient conditions for the occurrence of the phenomenon under study. #court #latinamerica #politics #politicalscience #comparative #judicial #studies #rc09 #constitutions #qca #foroprivilegiado #penal #criminal #institutions #privileges

This was a great talk. I learned about the operation of bipartisanship in foreign relations and how some of it is driven by the institutional arrangements of Congress.
With foreign policy bipartisanship happening this week in real time on Capitol Hill, join Sarah Binder, Lester Munson, Daniel Silverberg, Lauren Bell, Katherine M. Robiadek, and me today (April 19) at 1 PM ET for an online roundtable on my book Bipartisanship and US Foreign Policy, sponsored by National Capital Area Political Science Association and American Political Science Association. The Department of Political and Social Sciences (SPS) is accepting papers to the workshop on Political Behaviour in Central and Eastern Europe, taking place on 27-28 June 2024 at the European University Institute (EUI). The workshop aims to bring together scholars, both from the East and the West, who empirically study political realities in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) through within-country, between-country, or between-region comparison. It understands political behaviour broadly and is open to papers studying public opinion and attitudes, voting, elections, political parties, inter-group relations, and political participation. Papers can approach the workshop’s theme from a variety of different methodologies, but submissions that employ quantitative or mixed methods will be given priority. Each accepted paper will be thoroughly discussed, and the workshop will offer ample opportunities for establishing professional connections and collaborations. The workshop is convened by EUI Professor Filip Kostelka. Distinguished EUI faculty members, namely Professors Elias Dinas, Simon Hix, and Hanspeter Kriesi, will participate as both presenters and discussants. Learn more in the call for papers. The deadline to submit an abstract is 18 March 2024. Full details https://lnkd.in/eWPMhhWV

Dear all, It’s my pleasure to share that for the second time I managed to get published in a peer-reviewed academic journal. The present work co-written with my father Pf. Laurent de Briey investigates a new policy proposal in the Belgian context: The Multiple Proportional Vote (MPV). The key idea of the MPV is that, within a country in which there are different communities such as Belgium, alongside their normal vote for the representatives of their communities, individuals will also have a vote (weighted less of course) on the election of the representative of the other community. The point is to provide an incentive to politicians of each community to take into account the interests of the other community. In the paper, we compare such a proposal with one of its main alternatives: the federal constituency. Thanks to a numerical simulation, we also show different ways of implementing it and the different resulting outcomes. If such a paper is quite far away from my more abstract current research areas, it has the advantage of being directly relevant to Belgian politics. If people currently involved in the federal government negotiations are looking for new ideas, here is one.

Starting from the traditional public administration dichotomy ‘power versus knowledge’, concerned with the cleavage between politicians and bureaucrats, this paper’s main purpose is to reframe a classic theoretical model, by placing the spotlight on a new, under-conceptualized public sector actor: the technocrat. Second, the paper performs empirical research starting from an own-build comprehensive database that includes all the ministers appointed in the Romanian Government during a 30-year time[1]frame (October 1991-November 2021). Despite being a rather young democracy with a communist public sector legacy, research findings indicate that in Romania we can identify patterns similar to other European countries (primarily Italy), consisting of appointing technocrats to the cabinet. Such nominations are discussed in correlation with the advancements of new theories of democracy and public administration, imprinted with Neoliberalism, New Public Management, and Good Governance paradigms. https://lnkd.in/e_9Dqdhs

The 2024 Australian Political Studies Association (APSA) Conference will be hosted at The University of Western Australia from 25-28 November. We invite papers/panels from colleagues in Australia, New Zealand, and the wider region on any area of political studies and those that speak to this year’s conference theme. The APSA 2024 Conference forms part of this year’s Congress of the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. This year’s conference acknowledges that “2024 is not just an election year. It’s perhaps the election year”. It is estimated that up to 4 billion people are due to cast their votes in elections across a diverse array of democratic and not-so-democratic nations around the world. Big questions abound about the condition of the democratic project in the 21st century: What does a rise in populism mean for democracy? How can we make sense of and address fraught geo-political relations? What are the political and policy implications of large-scale migration and displacement, pressures on social cohesion, concerns about environmental tipping points, and challenges in containing the cost-of-living crisis? What is the future of Indigenous politics in Australia (and elsewhere) in the wake of the Voice Referendum? What are the prospects of a more representative and diverse democracy at the local, state, and federal levels? We invite colleagues from Australia, New Zealand plus the Indian Ocean and Asia-Pacific regions to submit abstracts and panel proposals that speak to the broad theme of the conference as well as any other area of political studies. Submissions include: 1. research papers (oral presentation); 2. specialist academic panels (pre-organized by the coordinator; oral paper presentation); 3. policy/practice/pedagogy roundtable (pre-organized session by the coordinator; oral discussion); 4. Author meets critics/book launch (pre-organized session). APSA 2024 Conference Tracks: · Australian Politics · Comparative Politics · Gender/Sexuality and Politics · International Relations · Political Theory · Politics in Asia · Environmental Politics · Indigenous/First Nations Politics · Media and Politics · Public Policy and Governance · Open Track Key Dates and deadlines: Submissions open: Friday 31 May 2024 Submissions close: Friday 12 July 2024 Notification of results: Friday 9 August 2024 The forthcoming conference website will provide more details on the abstract submission portal, conference streams, local organizing committee, conference program, key dates, conference venue, accommodation/travel, and APSA awards. Further details will be announced via email and social media platforms, including Twitter/X and LinkedIn. Proposals can be submitted at the following link: Note- please contact directly to the organisers #conference #english #australia
