#Visa and Ethio Telecom Launch Ethiopia’s First Virtual Visa Card to Streamline #Cross-Border Payments
Ethio Telecom, in collaboration with Visa Inc., has launched Ethiopia's first wallet-based virtual Visa card, in a significant move that promises to expand the country’s #digital financial services.
As highlighted in the press release, this strategic partnership introduces not only the virtual Visa card but also new services aimed at streamlining #cross-border money transfers via Visa Direct and the Telebirr Remit App.
The Visa Direct service enables Visa cardholders, including both individuals and institutions from over 190 countries, to transfer money directly to #Ethiopia using the Telebirr virtual card number. With this service, recipients using a virtual Visa card can receive remittances directly on their mobile devices, providing a convenient and efficient way to access funds.
To receive money, customers must first register for the Virtual Visa card within Ethio Telecom's Telebirr SuperApp, after which they can share their 16-digit virtual card number with senders abroad. Funds can be received within an hour, highlighting the service's convenience and efficiency.
Beyond the virtual card, Ethio Telecom also rolled out the Telebirr Remit App, which allows Ethiopians living abroad to send money directly to their friends' and relatives' Telebirr accounts.
The service currently supports #remittances from nine countries, including the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, with plans to expand further based on demand.
With Telebirr boasting 47.55 million users as of the 2023/24 Ethiopian Fiscal Year, this joint venture promises to create a more accessible and inclusive digital financial landscape in Ethiopia, supporting the nation's move towards a cashless society.
