A year ago, at the Shanghai Auto Show the Chinese #automotive industry showcased what’s in the box. At the IAA MOBILITY 2023 at the latest, it became more than obvious that Chinese BEVs were here to stay. And at the end of April, exciting innovations will once again be unveiled at the China Auto Show in Beijing. A good opportunity for a sneak preview and to take a closer look at the Chinese car market and analyze how Chinese OEMs want to gain a foothold in the European markets. The market entry of the Chinese will stimulate competition, accelerate the ramp-up of e-mobility and consumers can benefit from a wealth of new and, above all, affordable models. Automotive lightweighting is a major trend in the new energy vehicle industry. This is mainly because lightweighting can improve the range of new energy vehicles, reduce energy consumption, and help lower battery costs. Since the battery packs of new energy vehicles are relatively heavy, lightweighting is particularly important for these vehicles. Lightweighting technology can reduce the weight of components, improve driving range, and reduce component wear while meeting vehicle safety requirements. For example, according to the announcement by China Jushi, reducing the weight of the entire vehicle by 10% can improve fuel efficiency by 6%-8%; for every 100 kg reduction in vehicle weight, fuel consumption per 100 km can be reduced by 0.3-0.6 liters; and reducing vehicle weight by 1% can lower fuel consumption by 0.7%. Additionally, the application of lightweight technology can shorten braking distances, increase kinetic energy savings, improve acceleration performance, enhance maximum speed, and reduce noise and vibration. Lightweighting also helps control the cost of new energy vehicles. On Tuesday I was in Genève at the auto show 2024: one of the saddest day of my life... remembering the fast and the affluence of pre pandemic editions it was so disappointing to see how the European automotive industry has given away its strength and technical leadership... Just one OEM was able to show some initiative showing, (correctly) a catalogue of vehicles ranging from ICE, to hybrid, to BEV with a point of technical pride in presenting a new small BEV, well designed and even better assembled. For the rest some Asian manufacturer very well prepared in showing their EV "beauties" (...) sure to make it happening, because pushed by a strong ideology. There is no one single solution for reducing CO2, imposed by empty minded politicians and specific geopolitical strategies, but instead technological neutrality able to express the best in each technology and then at the end the market, the only actor able to make real things happening (i.e. sales), it will make the final decision on winning solution. Go Europe!
