Many industrial emulsifiers have only been widely used in food production for the past few decades, and their long-term health impacts remain largely unknown. Although they are used in small quantities, their abundance in packaged foods has caused many to question if they could cause harm. Preliminary research has indicated this could well be the case, and it is this research that is now grabbing headlines. The development of food safety has made great progress, particularly through the use of modern technologies such as DNA analysis. But how is food safety developing in general? Food safety is constantly evolving in a dynamic process between the latest scientific findings on possible risks, the interests of industry in smooth trade and consumer expectations of a high-quality food supply. It is important for food safety worldwide that globally traded products are safe and that internationally agreed standards are adhered to. Anyone wishing to import agricultural goods into the European Union must also comply with the legal regulations that apply here in the same way as any participant in the EU internal market. This is checked at the defined EU import points. However, the German government is also intensively involved in the work to achieve a high level of consumer protection worldwide. For example, Germany is the host country and chair of the Committee on Nutrition and Food for Special Nutrition and Food for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU). interesting study on (dutch) consumer's perception about highly (ultra) processed foods... main takeaway for me: good and correct information and consumer's education on food, food processing and nutrition is key to develop a proper and balanced attitude about food and nutrition in general... a finding in the study is that information today is unclear and scattered around, so here it's a nice (and continuous) challenge for us food professionals 😉
