Opening in Spring 2025, the Gipson Play Plaza at Dorothea Dix Park in Raleigh will be a public space for all ages with play spaces, art, a civic plaza, fountains, gardens, and more. Near the park’s entrance along Lake Wheeler Road, be sure to check out two recently completed utility line poles that pay homage to the park’s sunflower field by Raleigh-based artist, Thomas Sayre. These sunflower power poles feature 48 stainless steel petals between 8’ and 10’ long; an extraordinary display welcoming visitors to the future Gipson Play Plaza. S&ME is proud to have performed geotechnical services for these projects. Read more: https://bit.ly/3VzOhuO #HelpingYouProsper

What if your eyes could paint an experience without ever picking up a brush? James Turrell’s work answers this question in mesmerizing, unexpected ways. Instead of paint or stone, he sculpts with light—filling rooms with luminous color, building spaces that make us question what’s real, and stretching our senses in ways we didn’t think possible. Take his “Ganzfeld” installations. Each room is a field of vibrant neon that envelopes you, blurring the lines between walls, ceiling, and floor. Or his “Skyspaces”—carefully framed ceilings open to the sky, creating a visual illusion where the sky seems flat, almost within reach. This isn’t just an art piece on a wall; it’s an invitation to step into a different reality and reimagine the role of light itself. But Turrell’s journey to this radical art form is equally bold. In the 1960s, he studied art at UC Irvine before an arrest for teaching draft dodging interrupted his studies. Turrell spent nearly a year in prison, often in solitary, where he fixated on faint traces of light—a moment that would forever shape his work. By the time he returned to California, he was living in a derelict Santa Monica hotel and channeling all he’d experienced into installations that turn light into both medium and muse. Today, Turrell’s influence spans continents. His installations can be found in 30 countries, from Europe to Japan to the Yucatán Peninsula. His famed Roden Crater, a celestial observatory inside a dormant Arizona volcano, has attracted high-profile admirers like Kanye West, who contributed $10 million to support its completion. After four decades of work, Turrell’s masterpiece is closer than ever to being accessible to the public, proving that art can truly reshape how we see the world. #JamesTurrell #LightSculpture #ArtAndPerception #RodenCrater #ContemporaryArtist #GlobalArt #Skyspaces #ImmersiveExperience #ArtBeyondBoundaries #SeeingIsBelieving

When the Giant Hand of Vyrnwy first went viral, I couldn’t stop looking at it! At first glance, it’s a towering hand emerging from the earth, but the more you look, the more it feels alive. Simon O’Rourke created this 50-foot masterpiece from the remains of the tallest tree in Wales. A storm damaged the tree, leaving it destined to be cut down. Instead, it was given a new life. The hand rises from the rough bark of the trunk, transitioning into smooth, lifelike skin, complete with creases and curves. It strikes me as a quiet conversation about life, loss, and renewal - a reflection of what we’re experiencing together. I’ve always been drawn to art that speaks to the world around us. Much of the art today - books, paintings, sculptures - is inspired by our changing climate. The use of tung oil, a plant-based and eco-friendly material, is one small example of how it stays rooted in the natural world even as it transforms into art. What moves me most is the story behind it. As the oldest tree in Wales, it stood for centuries before the storm, and now it lives on in a different form. Even in destruction, there is room for beauty, imagination, and hope! #art #climate #trees #environment

Step into the Billiards Room at Wardown House, and you'll find yourself immersed in a unique blend of heritage interpretation and modern innovation. At Imagemakers, we faced the challenge of delivering a wealth of content to visitors in a way that was engaging and accessible. Our solution? A touch table designed to resemble a billiards table, complete with a twist. Collaborating with the client group and Wide Sky Design, we embarked on a journey to merge the elegance of billiards with the digital realm. But why billiards and not snooker? Well, there's something timeless about billiards that resonates with history and tradition, making it the perfect fit for our vision. As the concept evolved, so did the game itself. Visitors now find themselves not just exploring, but actively participating in the experience. Points are scored by potting balls, executing cannons, and skillfully going in-off, all in pursuit of unlocking rich content about the town of Luton. But the real magic happens when you delve into the content itself. Pinch and zoom into high-resolution photos, documents, and points of interest on the map of Luton, and you'll discover a treasure trove of detail waiting to be uncovered. Elise, Head of Heritage & Collections at The Culture Trust Luton, speaks of the success of the Billiard Table over the past seven years. #WardownHouse #InteractiveMuseum #BilliardsTable #LutonHistory #MuseumInnovation #TouchTable #ExploreLuton #Heritage #HeritageInterpretation
