Discussion with Melanie Hyte: How COVID-19 Impacted CAUTI and CLABSI Rates in Alabama We recently came across a fascinating study by Melanie Hyte, PharmD, BCIDP and colleagues published in the American Journal of Infection Control (AJIC). Their research sheds light on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare-associated infections in Alabama hospitals.Key findings:• Pre-pandemic: Significant decrease in CAUTI (7% per year) and CLABSI (13% per year) rates from 2015-2019. • During pandemic: Alarming increase in CAUTI (29% per year) and CLABSI (35% per year) rates starting in 2020.The study highlights the challenges faced by healthcare systems during the pandemic: - High volume of critically ill patients - Resource depletion - Staffing shortages - Potential impact on infection prevention practices This research underscores the need for robust infection prevention strategies, especially during healthcare crises. It's a must-read for healthcare professionals and administrators focused on improving patient outcomes and quality of care. #HealthcareResearch #InfectionPrevention #COVID19Impact #PatientSafety

An Evaluation of Antimicrobial Prophylaxis for Transrectal Prostate Biopsies; a Potential Stewardship Target ____________________________________________________ Results of New study suggest a need for guideline adherence. There was no benefit to using the guideline-discordant regimens as they were not associated with a decreased risk of infection, and in many cases exposed patients to unnecessarily broad and prolonged antibiotic regimens.
