Faceted navigation is one of the most interesting and complex topics because it touches upon so many technical challenges, as well as being able to manage at scale. It's my go to for interview questions as well to understand how SEO practitioners think. My opinion on fragments has gone full circle. What is most important is understanding the trade offs between the technical implementations - you may still wish to use fragments, but please spend a little time with your dev team(s) running a discovery or spike.
