At the Charles Koch Foundation (CKF), we think a lot about what it takes to help people thrive and live a life of meaning. We believe part of the answer is ensuring every person has opportunities to find and do work that connects to who they are as a person — their aptitudes and interests, their values, and their vision for making an impact. By this measure, I am lucky. At CKF, I have the opportunity to work with partner organizations that are devoted to what we call the Principles of Human Progress. Among others, these principles include dignity — the belief that every person is capable of extraordinary things — and openness, the idea that the free movement of ideas, resources, and people enhances personal and community well-being. These partners are doing great work. They are helping Americans to reflect on the foundational principles that have driven steady, but uneven, progress toward a society committed to the life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all. And they are working toward a future where, like me, all Americans have the opportunity to acquire skills that will allow them to find a job that gives them both purpose and a paycheck. I hope you’ll take a moment to read more about these organizations, the Principles of Human Progress, and CKF’s enduring commitment to creating greater opportunity for all people. As part of the Charles Koch Foundation (CKF), I’m proud to work with organizations devoted to helping more people live lives of meaning and contribution. Several of these partners are highlighted in CKF’s end of 2024 impact story, which I’ve linked to below. One example is our support of Skills First Future, a new initiative from SHRM that will help companies translate excitement about lifelong learning into practice. Its tools include an artificial intelligence-based system that helps employers understand how to adopt skills-based practices, a resource library to assist employers in selecting effective hiring tools, and a credentialing system to certify human resources professionals, hiring managers, and C-suite executives in skills-first practices. The impact story merely scratches the surface of what CKF’s partners do, and how they are creating greater opportunity for people. I hope you’ll read the full story and get in touch if you want to learn more about this work, or if you want partner with CKF. A Call to Action.... To begin: there is little chance of navigating today’s meta-crisis without a concomitant transformation in our capacity to make sense of those crises and, indeed, of the very world in which find ourselves. This is as true at the global level, as it is within our organizations, as it is within our families—and indeed within ourselves. Today’s meta-crisis lives within the sensemaking by means of which we come to understand it, just as it arises from that very same quality of sensemaking that generated it to begin with. 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 is a manner of engaging with those qualities of sensemaking, in order to vividly reveal the ways in which they limit our capacity to consciously (and collectively) frame the nature of reality. Many people are doing the good and necessary work of articulating the nature of mind, of consciousness, of sensemaking required for navigating this complex terrain. I think, for instance, of the work of Inner Development Goals, of Robert Kegan and Lisa Lahey, of Otto Scharmer and his colleagues at U School, and of Robert (Bob) J. Anderson and his recent Unity Academy. There are many, many others. Nearly five years ago, I completed a book (Evolvagility) that asked not so much the “what” of the nature of this new quality of consciousness, of sensemaking, but the “how”. Specifically, it asked “What are the methods and qualities of the design of social containers needed to catalyze genuine human transformation (in the way we’re talking about it here)?” Since then, I and my colleagues have continued to develop this work. In doing so, we draw insight and insight from a vast array of research traditions, most notably adult development, dialogic OD and vertical facilitation (verticalfacilitation.com). We have also engaged in designing & leading dozens of courses, workshops and programs over the years, in which we have fine-tuned what it means to catalyze transformative change in groups and organizations. We believe we have made great progress toward the cracking of this nut. I want to celebrate this declaration by sharing with you the launch of our newest enterprise. We call ourselves 𝐄𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, and our specialty is helping companies achieve breakthrough performance, by upgrading the qualities of the activities and inner meaning-making structures by which people make sense of, and act within the context of, their world. Imagine if we measured success by the amount of safety people felt in our presence. ---- For a long time, I’ve imagined a different world—one where everyone’s needs are met, creating a sense of contentment with what we have. A world where we don’t over-produce, over-consume, or worse, violate in pursuit of unconscious, unmet needs. Instead of the constant pursuit of "never enough," imagine a shift to “enough for each,” as Gaya Herrington so beautifully describes in her recent #TEDtalk (below): Will the End of Economic Growth Come by Design—or Disaster? But to make this a reality, we must first understand our needs—collectively, yes—but perhaps even more crucially on an individual level, starting from the very beginning of life. Children are born with needs, and as parents, our most important role is to understand and meet those needs. By doing so, we create a sense of safety, laying the foundation for their healthy development. Without that safety, we limit their opportunities to grow and thrive. A baby’s cry is the clearest feedback we receive—their nervous system signaling for what they need. If we fail to respond consistently, they adapt by developing strategies rooted in disconnection. And from that place of disconnection, it becomes harder to care—for each other, and for the environment we all share. In today’s world, where success is still measured by growth, it can be challenging for parents to stay present with their children during those critical early years. I feel this challenge deeply, from the constant connection to devices that demand our attention, to the societal expectation that both parents should always be working. It might therefore seem contradictory to start a new company as I enter maternity leave, given what I’ve just shared. But the truth is, I see this as an opportunity—to grow both a business and a new life, where my definition of success is measured by the safety people feel in my presence, as an answer to Gaya's question: "Who do we want to be, and what world do we want to live in?" Yes, the traditional output of Perlur Publishing will be books and educational material designed to support children's personal development. But what I truly hope to create is a safe space—one where my family, my collaborators, and my customers can thrive and grow alongside me. --- And on that note, I couldn’t be prouder of the message I received this morning from the illustrator I hope to collaborate with, after our first meeting on Monday. "I feel so trusted by you," she wrote. I hope this is the beginning of a collaboration where she will have a safe yet ambitious platform to shine with her incredible artwork.

🌟Transforming Vision into Impact🌟 As I navigate the realms of leadership and innovation, the stories of resilience and hope within low to middle-income communities fuel my purpose and drive my mission forward. In a world where the lines between success and fulfillment increasingly blur, I'm reminded of the profound impact our Insurance and Financials professionals journeys can have on the communities that form the very fabric of our society. 💡 This journey is more than a personal mission; it's a collective call to action. A call to innovate with empathy, lead with integrity, and serve with a heart that understands the struggles and celebrates the triumphs of every community member. 🌱 Embracing the 'BE DO HAVE' ethos, I am committed not just to achieving business milestones but to fostering environments where empowerment and growth are accessible to all. It's about building bridges where gaps exist, illuminating paths where shadows linger, and nurturing potential where hope seeks to bloom. 🤲 From community development to financial literacy, healthcare access, educational equity, and sustainable economic growth, the essence of my leadership lies in the belief that true success is measured not by the heights we reach but by the lives we touch and uplift along the way. Let's unite in our efforts to create a world where opportunities are not just privileges for the few but promises kept for the many. Together, we can forge a future that reflects the best of our shared values and aspirations. #LeadershipForChange #CommunityEmpowerment #PurposeDriven #InclusiveGrowth #BeDoHave #naifaproud
