Here is an article that presents the challenges family-owned businesses face over time. Families grow. Loved ones pass away. Visions of the future change. Nothing stays the same. An open style of communication and listening is imperative for the sustainable success and significance of a family's business. I'm reminded of a simple style of leadership I've read about through General (Retired) James Mattis, USMC. Listen, Learn, Lead, and Help. Mattis learned of this by reading about George Washington and realized that what worked for Washington, worked just fine for him. As an exit planning advisor, you can't possibly be equipped with the knowledge and skills to directly resolve every issue, and family feuds may be one of them. Instead, it's important to be able to listen and recognize these types of conflicts when they arise and recommend bringing the right people at the right time to help.

When we dream…especially if our dreams extend beyond serving ourselves, we need to think beyond theory and model after thise who have accomplished something in line with our dreams. What makes you and your unique and special? In what ways do you differentiate from your competition? Are you focused on your competition or on your special sauce? Daily Shake Up No. 852 borrows a lesson in differentiation from the Michigan’s most famous food – coney dogs. Michigan (and Detroit) are famous for coney dogs and, so much so, that the number 1 and number 2 rated coney dog restaurants are in Detroit. In fact, they’re on the same street. Actually, they’re right night door to each other – literally attached. Clearly, they have competition and yet they’re both thriving and have been for many years. How do they do it? I don’t know their respective secrets but I’m sure that there’s something that makes them different. When I visited them both several years ago one told me that the difference was vidalia onions versus regular onions. They also noted lamb skin hot dogs over regular hot dogs. The point is that we all have competition and the key to thriving is not being more like our competition. The key is to be different than our competition, even when it comes to coney dogs. We live in the high desert, so water is precious. But the monsoon rains present another challenge: the skies open, and assault the land with more than it can handle. In previous years, we’ve created stone lined canals, tight watercourses, and metal culverts to push the water away from vulnerable areas and send it straight to the arroyo (riverbed) just outside the property. But these rigid boundaries actually created a larger problem. If our boundaries are too strict and rigid, we actually create more problems, increasing the tension with others, blowing people out emotionally. Instead, boundaries are meant to be more dynamic and responsive to the conditions, and created with ease and spaciousness. Here's what to know about boundaries: 1. There are three kinds of boundaries: rigid, porous (too weak) and healthy. Healthy boundaries are dynamic, fluid, and change / adapt with varying conditions. What kinds of boundaries do you tend to set? 2. Sometimes when we’ve grown up boundaryless, we overcompensate and create rigid boundaries.
