Long-term Confidence Remains Resolute in the UK Aerospace Sector The UK aerospace industry continues remain strong as demonstrated by the the latest figures from ADS, the trade association for the UK's aerospace, defence, security and space sectors. Although orders fell 71% in the first half of 2024 compared with the same period in 2023, aircraft orders still this year remain at their highest level since 2018. Due to supply-chain, regulatory and capacity challenges, the sector still represents £7-8bn of value provided to the UK economy. ADS reports that there is a 15,668 global aircraft order backlog that is worth £247bn for the UK economy, 8.3% higher than at the same point in 2023, reflecting general sector confidence. Productivity within the sector has risen 25% since 2013, with the sector's c4,000 jobs providing an average of £104,800 output per worker. 88% of those jobs are located outside of London and the South East and the median average salary of aerospace sector jobs is 39% higher than the UK average. The trade association commented: "Despite notable challenges, the UK aerospace sector is thriving only a few short years since the pandemic that grounded almost all areas of the civil aerospace sector." "2023 was a record-breaking year for aircraft orders and deliveries, and the first half of 2024 has only fallen slightly behind 2023 delivery rates. The data for the sector in the last decade shows long-term resilience within the industry, as well as increasing productivity levels in this dynamic, innovative sector." "Intelligent support from Government to tackle issues in the supply chain, cash flow and capacity constraints has the potential to turbo-charge more long-term growth in this sector, providing significant benefits to the economy for the future" Aimie Stone, Chief Economist at ADS Source: www.adsgroup.org.uk #engineering #ukengineering #aerospace #supplychain #manufacturing #ukmanufacturing #precision

💡 Long-term certainty for aerospace R&D in the UK In last month’s Budget the chancellor named aerospace as one of the sectors with the biggest growth potential while confirming the government’s commitment to £975m of funding for the ATI Programme from 2026 to 2030. Today, the announcement was marked with the Prime Minister visiting Wales, where we also held this year’s ATI Conference. With 5% of the UK population but around 10% of the UK’s aerospace industry, Wales is home to one of the largest aerospace clusters in the world, employing over 20,000 people. 🎺 "The Magnificent Eight" (UK industrial sectors, including Defence) 🏭 Just to flag today's (14/10/24) ambitious Government Industrial Strategy Green Paper. Final version to be unveiled, alongside, very logically, spending review outcomes, in spring 2025. 🏭 That White Paper will also include specific plans for the "growth-driving sectors". Reassuring (rather than perhaps "great" or similarly inappropriate descriptor) to see DEFENCE identified as one of those eight key sectors. 🏭 In the wise words of the Green Paper (pp 23-4): ➡️ "The UK’s defence sector is a global leader. The Government will set out the pathway to spending 2.5% of GDP on defence. Defence and national security are foundational for economic growth across the UK and the defence sector provides good, well-paid jobs. Government defence spending supports around 434,000 jobs across the UK, equivalent to 1 in 60 UK jobs. The majority (67%) of defence spend with UK industry and commerce goes outside... London and the South-East – with local areas benefitting from defence exports. Defence drives innovation through investment in research and development..... ➡️ Alongside the UK’s significant defence budget (at £53.9 billion, with £25 billion of that spent with the UK industry and commerce on a range of key industrial capabilities), the UK is an exporter of leading defence capabilities....However, with threats increasing, the Government needs to address issues that inhibit or prevent growth in the defence sector. There has been a lack of UK government strategy on its defence industrial base in recent years. ➡️ The Defence Industrial Strategy will ensure that the Government can improve the UK's performance on defence exports and get more defence output for every defence pound spent. The Government’s manifesto committed to “bringing forward a Defence Industrial Strategy aligning our security and economic priorities”. This will be commissioned by the Secretary of State for Defence and will be the Sector Plan for defence in the Industrial Strategy. Defence Industrial Strategy will make sure the imperatives of national security and a high-growth economy are aligned. Strengthening the UK’s defence sector will boost the prosperity of its people. ➡️ With a better, more innovative and more resilient defence sector, the UK can innovate at speed to help Ukraine defeat Russia and restock its Armed Forces; deter its adversaries; seize opportunities presented by the technologies of the future; as well as creating new partnerships and promoting defence exports". 🖱️ For the full paper (and the names/details of the other seven sectors!), view https://lnkd.in/e7tmFqqj 🖱️ For advice on how best to address the consultation questions, kindly DM me. #industrialstrategy #defenceindustrialstrategy #ukmfg #HMT #DBT #defenceprocurement #defencesupplychain #MakeUKDefence #MOD

The desire for an increase in tempo and innovation, in order to develop a world class UK defence sector, will I believe have to involve an increase in involvement and engagement with the UK SME community. Current climate appears to be producing the exact opposite results, and the intent for ‘growth’ is not aligned to what is practically happening. Sustaining the status quo is challenging enough for many in this community. Unfortunately I believe that there is risk of the sector loosing skills, people and even organisations without urgent attention and change. https://lnkd.in/eC-5czY3.

The UK aerospace industry will see a boost in support from the UK government with a £975 million investment announced in the Budget last month. This will provide the industry with the confidence to invest in cutting-edge technology that will not only help to extend the UK’s global lead in wing and engine manufacturing, but also contribute to the development of zero-emission flights. Over the next five years, we’re expected to see a speed up in innovation, more job opportunities and ultimately better support for this key growth sector. As leading providers of pressure, vacuum and gas flow testing equipment for modern aerospace development, we’re pleased to see more support for this important sector over the next five years. It was a real pleasure to give evidence to the House of Commons Northern Ireland Affairs Committee yesterday on defence spending in NI. The committee's inquiry follows a report by Royal United Services Institute last summer which found that defence spending in NI is considerably lower than in other nations and regions and that defence spending can help level-up and drive significant industrial growth. The report cited Harland & Wolff’s £77m investment into Belfast following the award of the FSS contract to Team Resolute as an example of how strategic defence procurement can help drive reindustrialisation and long-term, sustainable job creation. The investment in technology, infrastructure and people is underpinning the transformation of the yard and will not only support FSS delivery but embed the latest technology across the group to increase our competitiveness in the European market and win new orders across our five markets of defence, commercial, energy, renewables and cruise and ferry. During PMQs earlier this year, the PM said: “I have seen, with my own visits, the vital role that Northern Ireland is playing through the location of firms like Thales and Harland & Wolff. I am delighted [that we] specifically committed to examining how we can further bolster Northern Ireland’s share of the UK defence sector because it’s another essential pillar of our precious economic union.” You can watch the session here: https://lnkd.in/gAMZBSvY.

An interesting session at the #Defence SME Committee meeting run by #ADS this afternoon. Main discussions were around the recently published Defence Industrial Strategy - Statement of Intent paper and its six priorities. Lots of good statements and opportunities for SMEs - will be interesting to see how this progresses into the formal DIS document, due publishing in late Spring 2025. #SMEs #DIS #Defence https://lnkd.in/eizrETnJ
