🌟 Update on Team Vista Community Centre: Our Journey Continues 🌟 With great excitement, we share with you the progress of our Community Centre, a testament to our shared commitment to education and community support. As we move forward, we reflect on what we have accomplished and what still lies ahead in this significant project. Achievements to Date: Your incredible support has enabled us to reach several milestones: - Laying a foundation that grounds our mission - Erecting walls that outline the space for dreams and learning - Constructing a roof with guttering to protect and shelter - Installing a water tank Our Next Steps: Our vision for the Community Centre is vibrant and inclusive, but to fully realise it, we still have tasks to complete: - Ceiling board installation for a polished interior - Electricals - Tiling for welcoming and durable floors - Adding a bathroom for comfort and accessibility - Plastering (inside and outside) for a smooth finish - Painting to add colour and warmth - Creating a kitchen with essential amenities - Finalising outdoor landscaping, including a cement driveway and a green lawn for community activities. Budget Update: Due to cost increases over the last five years, our project budget has risen from $50,000 to $60,000. We've reached the halfway mark in our fundraising, but to proceed with the next phases—specifically the ceiling and electrical work—we need to raise an additional $30,000. The house is coming along nicely! There has been significant progress, which may not always be visible on the surface. Much of the construction happening beneath the brick and mortar involves gradual changes. Only Jon and everyone involved, from sourcing materials to the builders on-site—truly understand the amount of blood, sweat, and tears that have gone into getting the project this far! It is starting to look like the process is moving along swiftly, with all the layers coming together. TONIGHT: Friday 11th October 2024, the first year students of the BSc in Architectural Technology at TU Dublin Bolton St. will build their own shelters and Sleep Out at Grangegorman Campus Central Quad to support the fight Against Homelessness as part of Focus Ireland’s Shine A Light initiative. By sleeping out, we hope to both raise awareness about homelessness, help raise vital funds to support homeless services, and to instill good learning outcomes relating to building design, performance, and thermal comfort. 10 teams of 6 students are challenged to create a structure that will house their group overnight, maintain 20 degrees Celsius temperature internally, achieve 100 lux daylight levels, and *stay dry*. 🤔I have a question (of course it's probably tenacious overthinking). There are many hotel flags looking at rebranding or repurposing old hotels (Spark for one). So, why aren't investors, non-profits, veteran organizations looking to do the same for housing projects (Roof Above, #HealCharlotte, #tunneltotowers) Is it because of land designation (commercial, residential only), is the cost of renovation, (exempting commercial office buildings) to building new, is it land greed of profit return. I would welcome the opinions of many on here. As stated above this question could be just tenacious overthinking!🤔

We are hosting a Mheitheal in County Cork next week. Internal repairs to random rubble walls. Dubbing out. Base and scratch coat renders and plasters. Consolidating reveals. The Vacant and Derelict homes grant scheme is by far the best initiative by Government to address the housing crisis and rejuvenation of our rural areas. 2024 for many of us practitioners has been the year of panicked grantees, desperate for hands to help. Us practitioners, up to our eyes with work, and stretched by poor weather and a lack of hands when things get tough. We feel like we are letting grantees down by just not being available, geographically, time wise or too small a team to make an impact. If we can't pull together once in a while the level of un-claimed funds will see this funding stream fail or neglect to amend criteria in favour of the people and heritage it can help. That's why we are issuing a call out to any masons, plasterers and tradespeople in the Cork or surrounding counties. A fantastic, hardworking and skilled couple are really up against the clock. With a young family to rear and a two storey farmhouse to renovate from derelict 2024 has been arduous. So far we have a team of four committed to step in and help. If you feel like you could be of help, may learn a little about vernacular repair or see the power of giving back after a very busy year then we would love to hear from you and explain in more detail and discuss your costs. Our forefathers knew this style of life, relied on it, learnt from it and lived in communities built on it. The Meitheal never died, we just struggled on and lost the natural act of asking for help.
