Wilderness and adventure therapy programs have faced a significant number of closures recently due to a combination of financial, regulatory, and societal factors. Notable programs such as Aspiro, Open Sky, SUSW of the Carolinas, and several others in Utah Oregon, and North Carolina have shut down within the past year (UPR) (Field Mental Health & Outdoors)Economic challenges have played a major role. Many of these programs rely heavily on private pay models, which can be financially burdensome for families. The instability of state funding and limited coverage from health plans have exacerbated these issues (Behavioral Health Business). The recent economic climate has further strained these financial models, making it difficult for programs to remain viable. The Outdoor Behavioral Health Council has gathered data on satisfaction with programs there remains inclusive information about the value of outdoor wilderness programs. Some data support that wilderness programs have made significant improvements in adolescent behavior, it's still many questions in the industry. The economic factors seem to have played a major impact on programs closing. Many ECs are still referring families to programs with success. There absolutely need to be more regulation and documentation in the industry.
