Today is Human Rights Day. It commemorates a truly remarkable document: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Human rights are not esoteric, outdated concepts. They are foundation stones to just, peaceful and inclusive societies. They are being regularly attacked and undermined here in Australia and overseas. Honoring Human Rights Day Today, on Human Rights Day, we are reminded of the universal values that underpin dignity, equality, and freedom. This year’s theme, as highlighted by the United Nations, urges us to reflect on the enduring importance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the work still ahead. As the Head of the Selection and Appointment Committee for the Human Rights Tribunal of Bermuda, I am deeply aware of how institutions like ours play a pivotal role in safeguarding and advancing these principles. The UDHR, adopted 76 years ago, is more than a historical document. It’s a living call to uphold equality, fairness, and justice in every corner of our world. Here in Bermuda, we embrace this call through the Human Rights Commission’s work and the Human Rights Tribunal’s work, ensuring that our community remains one where everyone’s voice is valued and protected. On this Human Rights Day, I encourage all my connections to reflect on how we, in our spheres of influence, can contribute to a world where human rights are truly universal. Let us be advocates, allies, and agents of change: both in our personal and professional lives. This year’s theme, "Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now," is a powerful reminder of how human rights are crucial to shaping a better world. In his 2024 message, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said, "Human rights are under assault [...] This year’s theme reminds us that human rights are about building the future — right now [...] We must stand up for all rights — always."
