MAXUS DELIVER 9 LWB DIESEL Maxus reckons that new vehicles don't have to be as expensive as they are. Dacia has proved that in the car market. Now this Chinese brand is doing the same when it comes to commercial vehicles. You do at least have a choice. The LDV brand the Maxus marque was sired from provided that choice by re-branding an ageing product. But the Deliver 9, if not quite as sophisticated as some of its volume brand segment rivals, does feel every inch a modern large LCV. And it can offer running costs that are at least now in the same ballpark as competitors. Which wasn't the case with the old LDV V80. Yes this Deliver 9 is only a starting point for the Maxus brand in our market, but it's still probably a large van that many more small to medium-sized operators really ought to be considering. Honda always think of new ways to do things, and often they are unconventional: The NR500 / NR750, the CX650 turbo, their long-term commitment to V4 engines in road bikes, the Gold Wing. Some of their ideas were a success, some were a flop and others never saw the light of day. I worked for Honda in F1 engine development in 2008, and they had some very novel approaches to many aspects of their engine, from piston rings to port design. Now this - a motorcycle powered by a V3 engine with an electric compressor. Honda are nothing if not inventive. After 50 years of production, the iconic German hatchback may drop the manual transmission option in 2024 due to new emissions laws. The 2024 Volkswagen Golf will only be offered with an automatic transmission globally, according to a report from UK publication, Autocar. In the Golf, the automatic transmission comes with up to eight gears, compared to the six forward gears in the manual transmission. This allows the engine to run at lower revs and stay within its most efficient power band, reducing tailpipe emissions. Australian buyers have not been able to choose a manual gearbox for the Golf since late 2021, when it was "temporarily" removed to allocate production slots to more popular automatic versions. It was promised that the manual option would return the following year. According to a spokesperson for the brand, “Golf sells as close to 100 per cent auto or DSG [dual-clutch auto]… We make cars our customers want, and our customers are telling us this is what they want.” It wasn’t until 2020, the UK bought more new cars with autos over manuals, compared to Australian buyers whom have preferred automatics for some time now.
