Here are a couple of the slides from my “ChatGPT, Artificial Intelligence, and the Future of Law and Accounting” speech at the Alliott Global Alliance® annual conference in fabulous Vietnam. It was a terrific program; Giles Brake and the whole Alliott team did a spectacular job, and attendees from 37 countries all had a great time. Well done, everyone! ✏✨ Check out my latest article, co-authored with my colleagues James Hutchison and Madeleine Kelly, on streamlining the prosecution of AI patent applications in Australia using European Patent Office (EPO) compliant specifications. ✍ 📃 🐨 🌍 In this article, we explore the remarkable overlap between the assessment of patentable subject matter in Australia and the assessment of inventive step in Europe. By taking advantage of these similarities, European applicants filing into Australia can streamline prosecution of their AI patent applications through the Australian patent system. ✅ 💻 Read it here: https://lnkd.in/ef5MS76B 📩 If you are interested in finding out how you can take advantage of EPO compliant specifications when filing in Australia, please reach out!
Maximising AI patent success in Australia can be achieved by adopting key lessons from European practices. By focusing on demonstrating technical effects and framing AI inventions as solutions to specific technical problems, EPO-compliant applications can streamline the Australian patent process and reduce complexity. 👉 Discover how leveraging European strategies can save time, reduce costs, and ultimately, enhance your global patent portfolio in the article linked via the image below. 🔗 Follow our Beyond Human Ingenuity Series for more insights into AI's role in modern invention: https://lnkd.in/gG_MbXkZ #AI #AIinIP #IP #AIPatents #Innovation #IPStrategy #BeyondHumanIngenuity IP Australia European Patent Office

Again, LinkedIn decided to ruin my morning by recommending a cringy post. You may have seen one of those: some doofus trying to make #ChatGPT to do math, it fails, point finger at stupid #AI and laugh. Hilarious. What I imagine is happening next in that person standing up from their computer with a satisfied smile, seeing a nail sticking out from the wall, and then proceeding to drive that hail deeper with a hard drive. Or polish fingernails with a belt sander. Or post essays in Twitter. You get the idea, any application of wrong tool for a simple task will do. Same with #LLMs. It is another tool that can do some tasks magnificently well while failing at others. If you need to do math, or count letters, or concatenate strings - there are solutions that have been around for dozens of years and do their job for orders of magnitude less computations. None of those "classic" tools however can understand what I am looking for from a very vague description. Like "I am looking for a Finnish sketch video. There is a coffee shop, a man buys a coffee with a thousand banknote, but gets change as if it was a hundred note" - this is something only a friend with close interests would (probably) remember from the description. Yet, an AI chatbot came up with the correct answer in a fraction of a second. So, enjoy some Finnish humor:

🙏Thank you EARMA for the great organized conference in Odense! For me it was a very good opportunity to catch up on a wide range of topics and to meet so many people. This included my Horizon Europe Legal NCP colleagues Ann Van Hauwaert, Lenka Chvojková and Poul. Perhaps the robot in the photo will also be a colleague of ours in the future if AI development continues to progress so rapidly. ☝️But until then, the strong network of human Legal NCPs will continue to pass on first hand information from the EC and provide advice on all financial and legal matters to all our clients and stakeholders and clear up ambiguities and rumours concerning implementation topics. #EARMA #Odense #conference #Legal_NPC #HorizonEurope

REPLACE THE Department of Commerce? WITH WHAT? Eliminating theDepartment of Education, because we don't need to educate the children, right? But I would think the business people in America would care about international commerce? CHATGPT: The Department of Commerce is a U.S. government agency responsible for promoting economic growth and job creation by fostering international trade, economic development, and technological innovation. The Department of Commerce oversees a wide range of activities and programs aimed at supporting businesses, industries, and communities across the country. Some of the key functions and responsibilities of the Department of Commerce include: 1. Promoting U.S. exports and trade agreements 2. Collecting and analyzing economic data 3. Enforcing trade laws and regulations 4. Supporting innovation and entrepreneurship 5. Managing intellectual property rights 6. Conducting research and development 7. Promoting economic development in distressed communities 8. Regulating and monitoring certain industries, such as fisheries and telecommunications Overall, the Department of Commerce plays a critical role in advancing the nation's economic interests and ensuring the competitiveness of American businesses in the global marketplace. https://lnkd.in/dpNQsmvf

How can the in-house IP team get the C-suite excited about protecting IP? I sat down with Alec Sorensen, founder and CEO of Tradespace, to discuss this important topic on a special video episode of Clause 8. We also discussed how AI can be the key to getting other parts of the company to help commercialize IP, risks of overly relying on AI, the genesis for Tradespace, the vision for its marketplace, and much more! https://lnkd.in/eBUspdc4

Perplexity and Google Search offer distinct approaches to information retrieval, with Perplexity leveraging AI to provide a more conversational and direct answer experience. Here are the key differences: AI-Powered Answers Perplexity uses advanced AI algorithms to generate concise, contextual answers directly in response to user queries. Rather than presenting a list of links, it provides a synthesized response based on information from multiple sources. This approach aims to save users time by eliminating the need to click through multiple websites. User Interface Perplexity: Presents a single, comprehensive answer Includes citations and links to sources Offers options to rewrite or expand answers Provides a clean, ad-free interface Google: Displays a list of relevant web pages Features various elements like featured snippets, knowledge panels, and ads Maintains its familiar "ten blue links" format for many queries Interaction and Follow-ups Perplexity allows users to ask follow-up questions and engage in a more conversational search experience. This feature is particularly useful for research and complex queries, as it enables users to dive deeper into topics without starting a new search. Source Transparency While both platforms provide sources, Perplexity makes them more prominent and accessible. Users can easily verify information and explore further by clicking on the cited sources within the generated answer. Personalization and Privacy Perplexity emphasizes user privacy and aims to provide personalized results with minimal data collection. Google, on the other hand, relies heavily on user data and search history for personalization. Scope and Coverage Google remains unmatched in its breadth of indexed content and ability to handle a wide variety of search intents. Perplexity, while growing, may not yet match Google's extensive coverage for all types of queries. Conclusion Perplexity offers a more direct, AI-driven approach to search that can be particularly effective for informational queries and research tasks. However, Google's established infrastructure and diverse feature set still make it the go-to option for many users, especially for navigational searches or when exploring multiple perspectives on a topic.
