Now that the dust has settled slightly after the election, there has been a positive reaction from much of the tech start-up ecosystem in the UK. Labour's climate tech strategy is particularly encouraging as they aim to create the "green financing capital of the world" #techstrategy #techpolicy #governmentpolicy #labour #climatechange #energytransition

In its first days in office, the UK's new #Labour government met with #mayors from across the country to reignite the #devolution of powers to local and regional government. It's a wise approach to economic development, writes SSE plc's Neil Kirkby, who says local leaders must be given space to become "nimble, risk-taking and entrepreneurial" policy innovators to drive an inclusive and green transition. In this #oped, he argues that the energy group's new wave of partnerships with UK regions and cities are early proof of the power of localised development 👉🏽 https://lnkd.in/gYXCVddf Have Your Say: What do you expect from the new UK government's focus on devolution? Optimism is necessary.
For those of you who follow the net zero debate and how countries can afford transition here’s a piece I’ve just written. The U.K. Labour Party had wanted to spend big on clean energy but fiscal policy prevented it. How to solve? They may have cracked it…

Government #policy should make it a priority to implement policies that ensure we desist from drawing down resources that ought to belong to future generations and cease passing on today’s costs to the future..... de-emphasising (so-called) #growth in favour of #sustainability. Since the 1980s, we have had 45 years of (so-called) growth, and the result is the economic and ecological mess we see around us. Since 1978 the costs of (so-called) economic growth have outweighed the benefits. Calling for more growth is only going to make the problem worse. #growthforwho #polycrisis https://lnkd.in/dNb24bEY

Interesting article in The Telegraph: Labour is considering implementing further net zero laws for large companies to limit their carbon footprint, complying with UN climate goals. The shadow climate and net zero secretary, Ed Miliband has confirmed plans for the crackdown to ensure businesses are aligned with the goals of keeping global temperature rises below 1.5c this century. This legal requirement would set a higher standard, holding companies accountable for their environmental impact and leave businesses open to lawsuits and possible government censure should they fall short. An interesting read this morning and heartening to learn that the ‘Green Economy’ is bucking a wider trend of economic stagnation in the UK. And yet more reassurance that decarbonisation really can be a win-win for communities across the country - well paid jobs, new career pathways for young people and reduced running costs for schools, the wider public estate and businesses. There really is no argument, economic or environmental, against getting behind and supporting our sector.

We won't deliver on ambitions or missions for economic growth, jobs, health, energy or security without protecting and restoring nature. Action on nature isn't a divisive issue - citizens, business and trade unions all want to see progress. We need government action to incentivise nature-positive business action and to stop businesses profiting from eroding the environmental systems on which we depend. As well as driving action through markets, we also need joined-up strategies for land use, infrastructure development, food security, climate adaptation and energy transition that prioritise protection of nature a prerequisite for addressing climate change and meeting our long-term economic and social needs. The private sector and citizens can play an important role in contributing to implementation strategies that deliver. The new UK government has an opportunity integrate nature into its missions and demonstrate real leadership. https://lnkd.in/eWsbqiVQ

There are a ton of impact startups with amazingly smart solutions to solve environmental challenges. But, what many of these start-ups don't realize is that they can't rely on their (potential) customers prioritising sustainability over basic needs such as housing, food, and energy. Even in cases where there are legislative requirements ("by 2030 all businesses must do..."), you're much better off solving a real customer problem while also solving an ESG problem. Of course, that's hard. Like, REALLY hard. You start from your smart ESG solution and start chipping away at objections: - Too difficult to use? Integrate it into their existing way of working - Hard to install? Do it for them - Too expensive? Find a way to lower the price For example, if you offer a solution to warm you home in a sustainable way, it needs to be easier to install and use than conventional systems, and preferably it should be cheaper too. Of course, I trust that the pendulum will swing towards sustainability again once interest rates, energy, and food prices drop, but in the meantime, you can trust people will prioritize their basic needs. Taking that as a starting point, you can find your way to Product Market Fit (PMF), rather than having a smart solution that solve an ESG challenge, with no customers.
