This opportunity allowed me to dive deep into the world of motorcycle manufacturing and contribute to the production of iconic motorcycles. Royce’s relentless self-learning and unwavering dedication set a new standard for excellence that shaped industries far beyond cars. Raised in hardship, Royce started working at the age of 10 to support his family, delivering telegrams and newspapers. He didn’t have the privilege of a formal education, but he had something far more valuable: curiosity and an obsession with detail. At 14, he began an apprenticeship at the Great Northern Railway. He spent his nights studying engineering, algebra, and French, feeding his thirst for knowledge wherever he could find it. Royce didn’t just want to build cars; he wanted to build the best cars. After purchasing a faulty second-hand vehicle, he didn’t just complain—he committed to doing better. In 1904, his obsession with perfection led him to create a car so flawless that Charles Rolls himself became his partner. That’s how Rolls-Royce was born—a brand now synonymous with luxury, precision, and craftsmanship. Royce’s impact extended well beyond the world of luxury cars. A Self congratulatory post for me as I quietly celebrate 30 years in the truck industry. No continued service with one company to be recognised just the advancing years and creaky back serving as a reminder! 10th August 1994 saw a 16yr old me starting as a Technical apprentice for Volvo Trucks UK, apprenticeships had had a rebirth recently and I was on the ‘Modern’ scheme. Good job….things moved quick and I saw some huge leaps in technology, seeing off Drum brakes for Disc, Manual for Auto, Analogue for Digital. Euro 1-4 and the introduction of SCR and EGR in just the first 15 years alone! Time with MAN Truck & Bus UK saw in Euro 5 and when I saw what a Euro 6 engine (combined EGR and SCR) looked like I knew it was time to trade the overalls for a suit and offer that experience in a number of supporting management roles. All of the advancements in technology were met with resistance along the years, the latest weak argument put up is Mirrors vs DAF Direct Vision System. – #nocontest, the improved view to front is worth it alone! It’s eye watering how quick time flies, although nothing made the eyes water like the exhaust plume of a Euro 0 truck on start up!....So no matter how we look back on the industry in the last 30 years we should be grateful for the advancements in emissions! What next?......No time to wait for Euro 7, lets just call it ZERO emissions….embrace the future of Electric Vehicles and do it with the manufacturer I chose to work with when drawing on my 30 years of industry knowledge! Absolutely thrilled to share my experience from last year when I had the incredible opportunity to visit Meyer Werft. Known for their remarkable shipbuilding capabilities, it was an eye-opening experience to tour a new build cruise ship. The sheer scale and efficiency of their operations left me in awe. Imagine the logistics involved in constructing such a colossal vessel, and completing it within just two years! This is something that truly sets a benchmark, and I believe the superyacht industry could greatly benefit from adopting some of these practices. Among the many highlights of my visit, the most impressive was undoubtedly the stage where onboard performances take place. The technology and innovation embedded in that setup were simply breathtaking—on par, if not superior, to some Broadway stages. This visit reinforced a belief I’ve long held: there’s a lot we can learn by looking beyond our own industry’s boundaries. Cross-industry learning isn’t as common as it should be, yet it holds immense potential for growth and innovation. 𝐖𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐮𝐬 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐦𝐬𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐮𝐩𝐬𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 Wallenius Wilhelmsen has announced that four of the 12 Shaper Class car carriers currently on order with Jinling Shipyard (Jiangsu) will be increased in size from a car capacity of 9,300 to approximately 11,700. The vessels will thereby become the largest PCTCs to date in the world. The four upsized vessels share many of the integral design features of the Shaper Class such as a dual fuel engine, methanol capable from delivery, improved ramp strength, significant high and heavy capacity and an extensive focus on energy efficiency, safety and crew welfare. The first Shaper Class vessels will start being delivered from the second half of 2026, with the new upsized versions due for delivery beginning late 2027. It was the start of an enduring and very productive partnership. Over a century later, long-term relationships remain a cornerstone of who we are and how we do business. Rolls-Royce is driven by long-term, win-win partnerships. Our horizons are long, with success dependent on lasting relationships that address the opportunities and challenges of the future. Our products are designed, manufactured and used over decades. We deliver them with quality and consistency, through sustainable collaborations with our customers and supply-chain partners. And we invest for the long-term, developing the technologies our customers will need in the future, such as our UltraFan engine, while meeting their needs today. We have developed technologies that Charles Stewart Rolls and Frederick Henry Royce couldn’t possibly have imagined. Rolls and Royce laid the foundations upon which generations have built the company we know today. Now we are strengthening those foundations through our transformation, to create a high performing, competitive, resilient and growing business. The changes we are making within Rolls-Royce will write the next chapter in our company’s history, just as that meeting in Manchester wrote the first.

It's Meet the Team Monday!👨✈️👩✈️ We’re excited to introduce you to the talented Pilots who make up our team at Belgian Cockpit Association (BeCA)! This week, we'd like to shine a spotlight on Cpt Bert Aerts: I am Bert Aerts, Captain A32F at Brussels Airlines, and flying for 17 years now. I am a BeCA member, working on FT/DT topics, and I am currently also vice-chair of ECA's FTL Working Group. Pilots are only a small segment of the working population: we therefore can only rely on the quality of our protection, rather than quantity. This means: carefully choosing alliances with unions, to complement their authority with BeCA's expertise; build internationally recognised expertise to punch above our weight; and maintain good working relations with stakeholders in our domain ( NCA's, EASA, ...) if we want to weigh in on decisions, we'll need to play it smart, not hard. I initially joined BeCA when the pilot pension got terminated in 2011. Since then, I have remained a member to support the long-term goals of the professional organisation. I pay for BeCA's services today, so the mitigation knowledge is there when a problem pops up tomorrow. As pilots, we prepare our flights according the "plan for the worst, and hope for the best" principle - then why not do the same for your career ?

📰 This week the FMCSA released stats on applications and rejections for the Under-21 Truck Driver Apprenticeship Program. I was surprised by how few applications were received (113) and how few were accepted - only 34 applications, or 30%, were accepted. 🧒 👧 Though in the current market, drivers are not as hard to come by, generating opportunities for young drivers should still be a priority. However, the lack of applications seems to indicate otherwise. I am intrigued to learn more about what is behind these figures. Is it driven by the current market 📉 , the safety restrictions imposed by insurers 📜 , the lack of interest from younger generations 😴 or a combination?
