Water is life, and the new Global Commission on the Economics of Water report is a wake-up call to raise our ambition on the global water crisis. For the first time, the hydrological cycle is out of balance, affecting all sectors. Just like the climate crisis, we need a collective, whole-of-society response for water. The report identifies five key missions, including transforming food systems, restoring ecosystems, and ensuring no child dies from unsafe water by 2030. We need a new course for water at every scale. At this critical moment, the Commission charts a path toward global water security and sustainable development for all. Opinion: As you read this, you’re likely inhaling a deadly substance. A silent killer lurking in cities, homes, schools and workplaces, claiming more than 7 million lives every year. Dirty air is the world’s largest single environmental health risk. But despite the alarming statistics, air pollution has not received the attention it deserves. Helen Clark, the former Prime Minister of New Zealand, and Soumya Swaminathan, former Chief Scientist at the World Health Organization, explain why next week’s World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Spring Meetings present a crucial opportunity for global leaders to make clean air a priority. "The report’s authors say world governments must recognize the water cycle as a “common good” and address it collectively. Countries are dependent on each other, not only through lakes and rivers that span borders, but also because of water in the atmosphere, which can travel huge distances — meaning decisions made in one country can disrupt rainfall in another. The report calls for a “fundamental regearing of where water sits in economies,” including better pricing to discourage wastefulness and the tendency to plant water-thirsty crops and facilities, such as data centers, in water-stressed regions. “The global water crisis is a tragedy but is also an opportunity to transform the economics of water,” said Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, director general of the World Trade Organization and a co-chair of the commission that published the report. Valuing water properly is essential, she added, “so as to recognize its scarcity and the many benefits it delivers.” Read the full article - https://lnkd.in/gxRMbPvw Read the report - https://lnkd.in/gxpPaWTE

Today on World Water Day, we stand at a crucial juncture in addressing the global water crisis. As highlighted in the recent UN water for prosperity and peace report, water is just not a resource, it's the backbone of health prosperity and sustainable development. Clean accessible water is a fundamental to public health affecting everything from nutrition to disease prevention. Yet millions globally are deprived from this basic right leading to a preventable health crisis that is exacerbated by climate change. Simply put. health systems cannot function without access to clean water. As we progress towards global milestones at UNGA and COP29, it is encouraging that water is a core theme that will be tackled through multilateral negotiations and dialogue. It is imperative that the water agenda be a top political agenda for the purpose of international cooperation and develop innovative policies to protect this critical resource effectively. Implementation of global and national policies on water requires an integrated approach and the alignment of strategies ranging from health to environmental to development, investment, infrastructures, and education. It required concentrated efforts from governments businesses and communities. On the backdrop of the Reckitt’s Social Impact Report, I am proud to see Reckitt’s leadership and impact on people and communities on water, sanitation and hygiene. Doing it through behavior change, supporting entrepreneurs and through innovative finance. It is a critical and exciting year ahead as governments, multilateral institutions, businesses, civil society, and communities collectively shape and engage towards a water secure world for generations to come for prosperity and peace. https://lnkd.in/exyJwBdG Hamzah Sarwar Patricia O'Hayer Philipp Küst Milly Dawson Masibonge Mkhize David Croft Sylvain Cuperlier Suzannah Cooley Ravi Bhatnagar Xochitl Morales #WorldWaterDay #WaterSecurity #SDG6 #WASH #WeAreReckitt #ProtectHealthNurture #FreedomToSucceed
