So many see ERM as strictly a means to reducing or eliminating risk. They search for magical software, fully integrating 'all the things' into a red/yellow/green dashboard that will supposedly be the secret to success. However, this isn't the purpose of ERM, nor is the magic found in such software. The attached article does a nice job of outlining key elements necessary to propel the role of ERM professionals to true strategic advisors.

How do you feel about a risk matrix in your risk assessment? I must admit I often struggled to find their value in my area of high risk deployments where more often than not everything is in the upper right quadrant. But speaking to loads of clients and subject matter experts - I have been convinced that they can be a useful visualisation in many many situations. And after much hard work on the development side of things, our small but mighty dev team are introducing a great risk matrix tool. Great because it is really easy to reorder the threats using a simple drag and drop functionality. So you can order your threats according to level and allow people to focus on the priority risks, quick. For me I hated messing around with risk matrices in word where one small cut and paste action or attempt to format could destroy loads of work and throw the whole table into disarray. In short, we have built a easy to use visual tool for risk prioritsation. As always - interested to hear from others what their bug bears are. And I haven’t’ even mentioned the subjectivity issues…….. #riskvisualisation #informationisbeautiful #riskassessment

Is It Time to Move Beyond RCSA? Exploring Stronger Process Control Designs for Today’s Challenges In today’s rapidly evolving business landscape, the traditional Risk and Control Self-Assessment (RCSA) methodology, while effective, may no longer be sufficient to address the complexities and heightened risks organizations face. As we navigate through an era marked by digital transformation, regulatory changes, and global uncertainties, it’s crucial to reassess our approach to risk management and process control. The Limitations of RCSA - RCSA has been a cornerstone of risk management, providing a structured approach to identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks. However, its iterative nature and reliance on self-assessment can sometimes lead to gaps in risk identification and control effectiveness. Moreover, as businesses scale and diversify, the static nature of RCSA may not keep pace with the dynamic risk environment. The Case for Stronger Process Control Designs - To address these challenges, organizations should consider integrating more robust process control designs. Here are a few reasons why: 1. Enhanced Risk Detection: Advanced process control systems leverage real-time data analytics and machine learning to detect anomalies and potential risks more accurately and promptly. This proactive approach ensures that risks are identified before they escalate. 2. Improved Compliance: With stringent regulatory requirements, having a dynamic and automated control system can help organizations stay compliant more efficiently. Automated controls reduce the risk of human error and ensure consistent adherence to regulatory standards. 3. Scalability and Flexibility: Modern process control designs are scalable and can adapt to the changing needs of the business. Whether it’s expanding into new markets or integrating new technologies, these systems provide the flexibility needed to manage risks effectively. 4. Cost Efficiency: While the initial investment in advanced process control systems may be higher, the long-term benefits in terms of reduced risk exposure, improved operational efficiency, and lower compliance costs make it a worthwhile investment. Conclusion - As we look towards the future, it’s clear that the traditional RCSA methodology needs to evolve. By embracing stronger and more dynamic process control designs, organizations can better navigate the complexities of today’s risk landscape, ensuring resilience and sustained success. Let's Spark a Conversation - Share your insights, challenges, or successes in implementing robust process control design. Is your approach to governance, risk and compliance holding you back or helping you accelerate safely? For organisations equipped with traditional project life cycles or software delivery life cycles, embedded in policy and standards, it can be difficult to avoid a sequential stage-gate delivery model where plans are set at the time of knowing the least. Reimagining your governance involves a rethink of what safety and compliance really mean for your organisation. There is a need to reevaluate the ways to satisfy regulatory requirements. A range of options are available with growing adoption across industry, yet knowledge levels inside some organisations still remain low. If acceleration is a business imperative to stay competitive in your market - it's time to have a chat with your audit and risk colleagues. Risk processes are being optimised for speed as well as safety: to keep your business safe and acheive speed. Those businesses which have embarked on this journey are discovering the positive tailwind effects. #BVSSH #BetterOutcomes #governance #waysofworking
