Buyer Beware Whole Foods: Whole Foods would not give a clear or straightforward answer on if they source produce treated with Apeel. ALDI: Aldi does not have a policy on Apeel and no employees are able to speak on it. Kroger: Kroger claims that produce items sold under their own label are not treated with Apeel food coatings. However, Kroger is not able to speak about or certify other produce brands that they carry. This policy applies to all of their locations and all of their subsidiaries as well including Baker’s, City Market, Dillons, Food 4 Less, Foods Co, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, Gerbes, Jay C Food Store, King Soopers, Mariano’s, Metro Market, Pay Less Super Markets, Pick’n, Save, QFC, Ralphs, Ruler, and Smith’s Food and Drug. Target: Target carries produce treated with Apeel including avocados, cucumbers, asparagus, apples, and citrus fruit. Love Whole Foods Cafe & Market: The two location Florida market has the following policy regarding Apeel. “Love Whole Foods Cafe & Market is currently working with our produce distributers to keep Apeel coated products out of our stores, and at the very least, expecting more transparency by requiring labeling on produce from companies that are choosing to use Apeel.” Complete list linked. #shoplocal #eatseasonally

Del Monte Foods will close plants in Toppenish, WA and Markesan, WI, to “align and streamline operational capacity with consumer demand.” Production will end on April 26, with labeling and distribution activities expected to continue until the fall. Currently, 90 people are employed at the Wisconsin plant and 127 in Washington. A Del Monte Foods said that there has been a realignment of “buying habits at pre-COVID levels that has required the company to assess its manufacturing network and reduce the number of facilities.” Del Monte — whose plant-based portfolio includes its namesake canned fruits and vegetables; Contadina canned tomatoes; College Inn broth; and produce, dressings and sauces under S&W — is the latest food and beverage company to close an older facility or construct a new building to bring production in line with demand. #delmontefoods #closures #foodandbeveragemanufacturing #jobloss #productionefficiency #consumertrends #jobcuts

🐎 Is this Horse Meat for the Middle Classes? 🐎 🍅 Outrage across Hertfordshire and the Home Counties as Yasmeen Louis breaks the news that Waitrose & Partners and other #retailers in #UKGrocery have been accused of selling Italian Tomato Paste made up of Tomatoes of Chinese origin. 📺 The BBC are very focused on highlighting #Supermarkets and #suppliers efforts to deliver value for #consumers in the cost of living crisis. 🐔 Whether that's making comparisons between Tesco and Aldi UK chicken nuggets or calling into question the origin of ingredients it only seems fair that consumers are buying what they think they are buying... Likewise, is our country's and #government's focus on cheap food always going to lead to outcomes like this? Who should be the most worried? I'd suggest the #Italians when the middle class of Britain realises that they like #Chinese tomatoes more than Italian ones... Bit like our burgers back in the day! #own-label #grocery #food

It’s incredible how since its launch this year, every small grocery store in my (small) town now sells plant-based Nutella. What’s even more surprising, though, is that these same stores still don’t offer tofu, tempeh, or other common plant-based meat alternatives. For these, I have to drive to big supermarkets. So, what can we learn from Nutella’s success in this context?

Last year, the growth of plant-based 🌱alternatives stagnated, but according to this article, a new phase of growth has begun. The British supermarket Tesco is seeing significant growth figures. Hopefully a harbinger for the rest of the market. 📈 We also see rising figures in sparckitchen volumes and we keep on contributing to getting more consumers to eat more plant-based foods more often with artisanal recipes based on local and natural ingredients. I hope the transition is able to keep the momentum with positive news on plantbased. Hope to read more upcoming period.. #vegan #vegetarian #plantbased #meat #alternatives #clean #natural
Sales of fish alternatives have risen by 100%, tofu and tempeh sales by about 20%. Plant-based steaks and chicken breasts by 20% and meat-free burgers are up 10% at Tesco. #veganuk #veganbusiness #plantbasedbusiness #veganproducts

Here’s a question, genuinely asked, Why do UK Supermarkets not pay certification fees to market Organic produce? Farmers, growers, packers, restaurants and wholesalers all have to pay a recognised certification body a fee and be inspected annually to be able to use the word “organic” in their sales and marketing info, but the multiples don’t. With over £2bn going through their tills annually from organic sales in the UK, a 0.3% levy* would yield £6m+ to cover a hell of a lot of marketing and certification costs, and I would hope the retailers would buy into what makes the food different. It’s currently just another catagory to clutter their stores, draw in high spenders & get massive price mark downs at the end of each day. * processors and wholesalers pay 0.3% levy on their organic sales, so I picked a parity rate #organic #food #business #retail

A lot of controversial discussions about Tetra Pak and introducing market and product untypical packaging.. Why disrupting traditional models with new concepts? Processed tomato products in Tetra is very practical and inexpensive solution. While quite common in Europe this is still very rare in North American mass grocery. Usual metal can or glass represent about 30% of total product cost in North America. Aseptic is about 10%… Can inflation and prioritizing value before stereotypes lead to new shopping patterns? Can this become a new trend? One thing for sure - we would never know before we try! Would you buy passata or tomato sauce in Tetra instead of traditional glass or metal can if price is right? How about (canned) vegetables? Corn? #retaildemocratization Walmart Canada Walmart Italian Trade Agency - Canada ITA - Italian Trade Agency Italian Trade Agency
