Haha, mega LOLS, funny story about punctuation pedantry, what a good joke… But it’s more than that. It’s an example of exactly the wrong way to deal with a problem like this. When your back end systems can’t manage content in the way your audience expects, the solution should not be to change the content - you need to change the systems. In this case it’s losing apostrophes, but what if a CMS doesn’t allow images? Do we just not provide images on our website? What if there’s no alt text field? Do we just ignore accessibility issues? No. We change the system. As much as I understand their reasons, North Yorkshire Council have made the wrong call here. Audience first, technical requirements second. I feel the council is using the database excuse to cover the fact that they either don't want to change the signs or they currently don't have the financial capability to change them. Updating or revamping the "database" won't be a big work.
