With the help of the #D4S (Design for Sustainability) approach, think along with the product development from the very beginning: It is now clear that companies can achieve both ecological and economic advantages and thus decisive competitive advantages through sustainable products. It is important to select the right product variants in the early phases of the product developement that both meet sustainability requirements and convince in terms of cost and performance. #Frontloading #ShiftLeft This white paper shows how successful implementation in companies can be accompanied at critical points of a Design for #Sustainability (D4S) with suitable methods and software tools. Engineering expertise is essential to the global transition towards a more sustainable future. However, this future needs to be designed before it can be engineered. Interesting read in this Fast Company article from a professional designer Joe Doucet on the importance of combining great design with innovation in problem solving and how this could be key to achieving sustainability goals. Capgemini research ‘Rethink: Why sustainable product design is the need of the hour’ suggests that an estimated 80 percent of environmental impacts associated with products result from design decisions. As such, sustainable product design is becoming increasingly important due to its potential for positive environmental and social impacts. From an engineering standpoint, data and technology are key to ensure we are making considered sustainable product design decisions. This benefits organizations by improving compliance, reducing emissions, and scarcity concerns. Read the full article below to discover why we must not settle for “this is how it’s always done” and how we can continue to strive and innovate for a more sustainable future: https://lnkd.in/eub_H--E

Did you know that 80% of a product's environmental impact is determined during the design phase? As an R&D professional, this statistic has profound implications for how we approach product development in today's sustainability-conscious world. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗥&𝗗 Engineers today face a complex balancing act: creating innovative products while minimizing environmental impact. We need to meet tight deadlines and budget constraints while ensuring our designs are sustainable. It's no longer just about meeting regulations—it's about creating lasting value for both our customers and the planet. 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 Here's how modern technology is helping us bridge the gap between innovation and sustainability: 𝟭. 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 (𝗟𝗖𝗔) 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 - AI-powered material databases help us make environmentally conscious choices from day one - Real-time sustainability metrics in CAD/Design software track environmental impact during all design stages - Machine learning algorithms identify correlations between design choices and environmental outcomes 𝟮. 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 - Building Information Modeling (BIM) simulates energy consumption across the product lifecycle - Computational fluid dynamics optimize thermal performance - Power consumption simulations identify opportunities for energy savings - Data-driven iterations refine designs for maximum efficiency 𝟯. 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 - Design for disassembly - Digital material passports track component recyclability - Modular design to extend product lifespan - Waste reduction algorithms to optimize material usage 𝟰. 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗟𝗠 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 - Single digital design platform to connect all R&D stages and stakeholders - Virtual twin technology enables simulation before production and operation - Real-time collaboration reduces inefficiencies 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 To successfully integrate sustainability into your R&D process: 1. Start Early: Incorporate eco-design and sustainability principles at the project's outset 2. Track Progress: Use project management tools to monitor sustainability metrics alongside traditional KPIs 3. Collaborate: Work closely with suppliers to source sustainable materials 4. Prioritize: Make informed trade-offs between sustainability features when faced with constraints 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 The future of R&D lies in our ability to harness digital tools for sustainable design. By embracing these technologies and strategies, we can create products that not only meet market demands but also contribute to a healthier planet. You can’t go circular on your own ! To shift towards #circularmaterialflows, organisations need to set up new business ecosystems. Which organisation is going to mobilise the #circularitymission? How is circularity going to shift the relationships in a #valuenetwork? How can a #circulartransformation be attractive enough for all actors? What framework can support the collaboration between actors? Today at the #DESIGN2024Conference, Avyay Jamadagni from the Dyson School of Design Engineering at Imperial College London is presenting our latest article on the #CircularBusinessEcosystemModelCanvas, a tool for collaborative design of #futurecircularvaluenetworks. The canvas allows actors to codevelop and integrate their individual business models supporting a holistic approach to #circularbusinessmodelinnovation. Collaborating with six organisations in the #wastewatertreatment sector, last year we tested the canvas on the circular flow for #ferricchloride, a chemical used for #waterpurification. If you have a case in need of a #circularbusinessecosystem, get in touch to experiment with the canvas. Many thanks to Lars Nybom from the Ragn-Sells Group for partnering with us on this research.
