It’s done. It’s decided. It’s deserved. Romania & Bulgaria will fully join Schengen on 1 January 2025. Congratulations to the people of both countries who have worked hard and long for this. A stronger Schengen signifies a safer & more united Europe. #StrongerTogether 🇪🇺🇷🇴🇧🇬
Sorry dtdo agree with Schengen. I prefer border checks and a bit more delay when flying and moving across borders. Schengen removes safety not adds it. You can see it flying out of frankfurt. No one checks that the person flying is actually the person on the ticket..
This milestone marks the culmination of years of effort by both countries to meet the necessary criteria for Schengen membership. Congratulations to the people of Romania and Bulgaria for their perseverance and hard work in achieving this goal to fully join the Schengen Area on January 1, 2025. . Their inclusion will enhance the strength of the Schengen Area, contributing to a safer and more unified Europe, with smoother borders and increased cooperation among member states.
We were ready since 2017, technically confirmed since 2015, is a bit late, still big thanks to Austria for their great partnership and solidarity, they helped us perfect our borders security systems for a decade, as many other times in our common history, now all should be finally perfect. We might be able to return the same commitment in the following period on perfecting gas, oil, banking, wood export and energy affairs, also improve our bilateral relations with the same level of attention to details. Still, sincere thanks for EU leadership support in navigating this unjust delay. Only together we can face the challenges we are about to face and Romania is a strong pro EU and pro NATO country.
Funny thing how expeditive EU can be when a populist politician threatens to upset the pro war cart .
And this is why the village of Schengen has been granted the label of European Heritage (European Heritage Label Bureau - EHL Bureau ) by the European Commission, promoting the European values, open borders and exchanges among European citizens. Go and visit this historical place and the museum to get to know more about Europe!
Romania has a fantastic IT workforce, it will be great for digitalization of the EU
Still on the Schegen agreement, I believe it should be adjusted to today's reality. As a Portuguese citizen, I agree with open borders but absolutelly well controlled by electronic means, so that criminality does not transfer between countries as easily as it currently does. A driver traveling on a motorway in Portugal is fully controlled. But if someone reaches the border via secondary roads can pass the border without any control. A country without controlled borders is not a country.

1wPlease excuse us for not saying "Thank you!". Instead we are waiting for a "Romania and Bulgaria, please forgive us!". We forgive you for keeping us at the Schengen gates for 17 years without NO reason, only for political matters. We forgive you for treating our people as second hand EU citizens. We forgive you for the frustration and for having now a problem in Romania with the far right pro-Russian politicians. We can't go forward without understanding the lessons of the past mistakes. On the other side, that "deserved" in your post, President Roberta Metsola is an offense to the Romanians and Bulgarians. You feel you give us a Christmas present because we were good? You did what you had to do! The lack of honor and moral principles of the Western European politicians generated this situation, not us being not good enough to deserve being part of the Schengen. Please show that you understand the right lesson of this situation and rephrase this unfortunate post.
