I'm so honoured to be the Featured Member of the National Association of Memoir Writers this month. Woohoo! What a journey it's been! I've discovered that my unique niche is writing memoirs, and I have written three! I love the genre because my memoirs are true stories about activist things I'm doing in real life. We can be guinea pigs and talk about the issues we care about. Like selling our only car to highlight climate change (in My SUV and Me Say Goodbye). Or fighting City Hall to build a green driveway (in Paradise Unpaved). Or using a memoir to spread the word about government censorship of my climate change art (in Banned on the Hill). Our actions can be chronicled and spotlight issues in a way that is more entertaining than a dry article. In my most recent book, I gave a true account of helping my sister Teresa escape forced care (in Freeing Teresa). The camaraderie at NAMW has helped me. At first, my lips were zipped. I was afraid to tell people about the book I was working on. But gradually, I loosened up. I heard from other authors who were fearful, too, of what their families would say. I knew I needed to persevere to tell my true story despite my doubts and use all the tips I heard: Use pseudonyms. Have documentation. Get legal advice. I'm so glad I took the advice to heart! Are you a memoir writer? Or have you thought of writing one? Tell me about it by leaving a comment. https://lnkd.in/gZPDdYdf

Until recently, Ghana was seen as a beacon of democracy and a safer space for LGBTIQ people in Africa. What changed? As my Outright International colleague Neela Ghoshal explains here, among other things, the right-wing, fundamentalist World Congress of Families held its 2019 meeting in Ghana, bringing together extreme conservative forces from around the world to discuss their anti-LGBTIQ agenda. WCF has spent years fighting against equality in the US and has become increasingly involved in Africa. The rhetoric they, Family Watch International in Uganda, and others promote has fomented a moral panic scapegoating LGBTIQ people and spreading throughout the continent. Moreover, openDemocracy has documented that from 2007 to 2020, over 20 US evangelical groups spent at least $54M in Africa “to influence laws, policies, and public opinion against sexual and reproductive rights." Yet the investment in LGBTIQ activism in Africa is simply inadequate. As reported by the Global Philanthropy Project, in 2019-20, funding in sub-Saharan Africa actually decreased and represented just 9% of the global total. In fact, only 38% of the total funding for LGBTIQ causes went to programs outside of the US, Canada, and Western Europe. Despite these challenges, queer and trans activists have made incredible, significant strides in Africa and beyond. They need and deserve radically increased support to counter rising attacks and continue making progress to ensure the safety & equality of LGBTIQ people everywhere.

Successfully defended Respondent in a recent UDRP dispute, "Respondent states that he is a member of the LGBTQ community and is materially harmed by laws which deny or abridge LGBTQ civil rights. Respondent contends that Complainant’s activities bring about laws that abridge LGBTQ civil rights " However, the Panel actually did not analyze the second and the third UDRP elements in its findings, they stopped at the first element and found that Complainant does not have TM rights for the purpose of the UDRP and did not proceed to analyze the 2 other UDRP elements. Yet, it is still an interesting decision by WIPO 3-member panel with some thorough analysis of the first UDRP element and common law/unregistered TM. It also contains a summary of our arguments on Free Speech use as legitimate interest under the UDRP and the bad faith issue in free speech and criticism cases A link to the decision is provided in the comment below #udrp #domains #freespeech #trademarks #disputeresolution #criticism #domainnames Source:
