I see so many deals where the founder(s) are obsessed with valuation. A high valuation is not the end all be all. Our early rounds at DealCloud had muted valuations and in the end all investors (and us founders) were happy with the outcome. This quick read from SaaStr goes through some pros and cons of taking a VC round (applies to all rounds) at a high valuation: https://lnkd.in/e_6NxQbx

Now that we've waved goodbye to the first quarter of the year, our valuation expert Steven Kay decided to peek at the fascinating world of bizval data and discover the reasons behind all these valuations popping up left and right. It seems like everyone's on a valuation spree, from reshaping offshore setups to tweaking trust movements. Read more below:
Business Valuation Specialist. Most businesses never sell. Let's discover what your business is worth, and most importantly, how to unlock that value.
With the first quarter of the year over, I thought I'd check bizval data on why valuations are being conducted. We are seeing a large number of valuations for structuring purposes, ranging from offshore restructures to movements in trusts. Aside from valuations for tax and structuring; startups and internal planning are also proving popular. We love seeing valuations that are done proactively and are looking forward to seeing how Q2 unfolds.

It is important to hear this story, how a VC game can turn out to be ugly. Founders need to make the time to understand the rules of the game. *Bear in mind that this story is set in the 90s, these days no founder would accept these terms from an incubator (at least I hope so). VC game or bootstrapping or mixed... Nothing is black and white, good or bad. To make an informed decision, founders should equip themselves with as much knowledge as possible. There are also some examples where VCs got tricked by founders, btw. So, founders: know the legal dance, be connected with good founders from today and before, do a thorough research...
