// The Work of the Next Generation of Designers and Anthropologists // Arvind Satyanarayan frames the challenges for the next generation of designers /and/ anthropologists. "Determining whether the /agency/ GenAI displays will enhance or diminish the human capacity for culture will be the work of the next generation of designers and anthropologists. We have attempted to delineate the kind of collaborative effort this work will entail, and detail a program of design research related to issues of accountability ..." "How should models be trained to value cultural diversity or avoid recurring patterns of oppression? How do human–computer interactions within the context window of a particular chat or project relate to broader sociocultural contexts in which people act?" "Addressing such enormous questions will advance fundamental science, technical art, and moral imagination; applying the framework of /distributed agency/ to human interaction with GenAI models will make them tractable." https://lnkd.in/gtxqYJuy https://lnkd.in/gydMj-q8

Meet another new BITA #Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Dr Moya Kate ! ✨ Moya is an interdisciplinary, human-centred researcher working across Extended Reality (XR) and digital media technologies, Narrative, and AI. Most recently she worked as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at UQ identifying the socio-technical risks of Extended Reality social gaming environments, extending this research into AI attacks-at-scale. How we can intervene in grooming and online attacks using AI to build safe virtual spaces is a major focus of her research. Moya is also a creative practitioner and built one of the first location-based games for phones, a 360 doco "Global Rivers" and recently released an augmented reality novel "Thesaura and the Magical Notebook", helping tween readers to learn about cultural resilience and climate change. Her doctoral research focused on designing a complex narrative for XR environments. Please extend a warm welcome to Moya! Our twilight lecture mini-series will continue on the 16th of May from 5:30pm with Dr Maurita Harney who will be talking about artificial intelligence from a philosophical perspective. “The problems with AI are basically philosophical not technical” (Terry Winograd, Computer Scientist and former AI researcher, Stanford University). In this paper I wish to draw attention to some of the philosophical issues arising from recent developments in artificial Intelligence. These developments compel us to confront questions of both a conceptual and an ethical nature. They include questions about the nature of truth and reality, the role of agency and creativity, and the question of machine sentience. At a time when governments globally are considering the ‘guard rails’ necessary to manage new AI-powered technologies, these philosophical issues cannot be ignored. Bookings via below link: or: Phone: 03 9347 3428 Email: membership@graduatehouse.com.au RSVP by: Monday, 13th May 2024 Prices: Combo Cost $20 (includes nibbles/drink and attending lecture) Virtual: Members $10/ non-members $15
