9 insights from a solo founder on getting 735,431 impressions on your LinkedIn post 💡 (Particularly useful if you're not Rory Sutherland or Simon Squibb.) A few weeks ago I posted my thoughts on comparative advertising — a marketing strategy that takes a brand's product or product features and compares them to a competitor, often in a fun or provocative way. It featured brand battles like Wendy's vs McDonald's, Hunter & Gather vs Heinz, and DASH Water vs Coca-Cola. The post took off and at the time of writing has: ✅ 735,431 impressions 👍🏼 1,100 reactions 💬 160 comments ♻️ 23 reposts It would be easy to say "write like this to get these results" but the truth is, it's incredibly hard work (and nobody really knows how to game the algorithms). I've been writing earnestly every week for over a year. Trying things out. Making mistakes. And learning. All of which are fundamental if you want to make LinkedIn part of your marketing as a solo founder or marketing leader. That said, there are 9 things that stood out on this post compared to others I've written that might, just might, help other founders and marketing leaders: ↳ A good hook (to grab initial attention) ↳ Familiarity (something close to your audience's heart) ↳ Be divisive (pit readers against one another) ↳ Visual (relevant imagery to keep people engaged) ↳ Interesting subject matter (e.g. within marketing) ↳ Human, honest language (easier said than done) ↳ A bit of a "how to" doesn't hurt ↳ Don't tag too many people ↳ Make it educational *** P.S. If you'd like to stand out in your branding and marketing, get in touch. P.P.S. If you get the chance to do a LinkedIn 30 day programme with James Hickson, drop everything and do it.

Founder-led marketing is generating a lot of hype – and for good reason. When done well, this strategy can generate much more than engagement alone. It can also lead to valuable conversions like signups and sales. So how can busy founders successfully execute this marketing strategy? And what kind of content should they create to make the biggest impact? Rosanna Campbell recently wrote a fantastic piece for Relato that answers these questions and many more. It's packed with helpful insights from founders and CEOs, including tips for building systems that get results. If you're a founder or an early marketing hire, this is well worth a read! https://lnkd.in/edYK9rB5

Early in my career I was a specialist. I started as a copywriter and only wrote brochures, newsletters, ads, and product inserts all day. This was before the intertubes and email became *a thing.* As the economy changed, marketing changed with it, and I kept taking on more and more marketing functions as departments got smaller. Personally, I wouldn't go back to specializing in one thing. While it seems attractive (focus on ONE thing all the time! 😍 ) it also sounds boring ( focus on 😴 one thing all the time). In my current role at SkillZilla, I'm doing all the things, and today, we launched a contest to help build our waitlist and social following. I had no idea how to do it before I started it. I was able to figure it out because of my marketing generalist background, which taught me that I can do anything with a little stubbornness and Google skillz. Anyway, if anyone getting started in marketing wants this Jurassic-aged marketers' opinion: be a generalist. It's way more fun. #startupjourney #edtech #marketingroles #careerpaths #skillzilla 🦖
