𝙃𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙮 𝙍𝙚𝙘𝙧𝙪𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙖𝙧𝙮 𝙩𝙤 𝙢𝙚! 10 years ago today I took my first Finance Director brief, and officially entered the world of recruitment. Various studies would now suggest that I've done my 10,000 hours, qualifying me as an expert in the field and therefore able to dispense advice! Here are some of the things I've learned along the way: - Answering the question "what do you do for a living?" with "I'm a recruiter" is just as effective a conversation-killer as "I'm an accountant". - In the UK, good recruitment advice & consultancy is still a massively underappreciated and undervalued service compared to other professional services. Not in all cases of course, but the stigma is still very real. Some proper regulation in our field would be welcome in my opinion, to give clients comfort & practitioners greater recognition of their value. - It's a hard job. Far harder than I ever gave it credit 10 years ago. It's incessant, relentless & competitive. Slip up and at least 1 of your competitors is waiting in the wings; ready, willing and able to capitalise. - Finding good recruiters to join you is ridiculously hard. We set about growing a business to upset the recruitment world, and to do it at pace, but only with brilliant recruiters. If you'd told me 10 years ago that today I'd be in an office with just 10 other consultants capable of wearing the "brilliant" title, I'd have been a bit disappointed at the scale. Now though, I would absolutely take an average of 1 a year. They truly are rare. So for those thinking of embarking on a career in recruitment, here are some of my thoughts: - Find a specialism that interests you. Don't do it for the money. For every recruiter you see driving a lambo, there are hundreds who just didn't quite get it and are toiling to make a living. - Brace yourself to be treated like a 2nd-class citizen. Thick skin is required as some people unfortunately will never value what you do, no matter how hard you try to convince them you can help, or that you're really good at what you do. - Work hard & look after yourself. Rest is as important as graft. The job is repetitive and multi-faceted but if you can strike the balance right, it's hugely rewarding. When you do strike that balance, please let me know how... And finally to those in the 10,000+ hours club - I salute you. I feel your pain & share your love for this most intoxicating of career choices. The thrill of the chase, the doing of the deal, there's nothing quite like it. The robots are coming and they're going to make our lives much easier, I promise. Just keep hitting those KPIs in the meantime... #recruitment #careers
James I can remember when you first started with Neil and Mark and you needed some help with some debts due to the FDYL client you were working for at the time. You have come a long way and throughly earned and deserved the praise you have received from work associates and other professionals. Here's to the next 10 years. See you for a well earned beer. Ian
Happy 10 anniversary James Roach! Always felt a wiser man after being in your company and these takeaways are brilliant, I can hear you saying the last note too. I will be 10 years in May next year too. Catch up soon buddy.
Recruiter, Accountant, Business owner, Golf bandit ... you've completed it James Roach! Congrats sir 🏆
And what happens when you say you’re a Recruiter and an Accountant. Do they just walk away? Happy anniversary James. You’ve survived a whole decade of recruitment. 🏅 I would say it hasn’t aged you… but then I saw your picture 😂
I couldn't ask for a better business partner James Roach, I'm being serious! We're having so much fun on this crazy but rewarding journey. How many brews do I make you in a day? Remember that. Happy number 10.😁
Like a fresh faced head back then. Love this mate!! Happy anniversary - good journey eh!? It gets easier and equally harder with age, only those in it will understand that oxymoron!
Congrats James. If others were are good as you then the world of recruitment would be a better place 👍. I always especially enjoy the cold calls from the others on a month end asking is it a good time 🙄🙈
I remember meeting you probably about 10 years ago at Headingley Golf Club. You’ve done great work James and definitely helped us Portfolio FD’s be both successful and respected. Here’s to your next 10 years 🍻
What a 10 years! Congratulations James, hope you’re really well

1moHappy Anniversary James ! Time flies and that picture is a blast from the past! 👏 You can be very proud of the way you and Headstar operate and you perhaps underestimate how thankful many people will be when they look back reflect what you've done for them. You are right - in many cases recruiters are not held in the same professional regard as other advisors - but then there is no qualification required as an entry point so unfortunately the industry attracts a lot of chancers and people who dream of the Lambo but just don't have what it takes to build long term client relationships by being "brilliant" at what they do. - this is why it is so difficult to recruit stars - if you've built a team with 10+ great people in it then you really have done a great job. - those who can forge a long term successful career will eventually get much of (if not all) the respect that they deserve. In my experience the trick is to move up the value chain - away from volume/contingent work as much as possible (which is a great grounding) and to become a retained advisor able to demand exclusivity - this enables us to become true business partners and part of a business's inner circle. Here's to the next ten years! Congrats again.
