What we eat is almost always a function of where and how we grew up and , underlined further by the access and affordability we had and continue to have, to food and markets. This piece by the BBC News India throws light on how caste and social structures play a defining role in consumption patterns among communities. Chronicling the journey of Marathi writer #ShahuPatole, this 7 minute piece is a startling commentary on how discrimination and marginalisation have led families in Dalit communities in Maharashtra to build their own culture around food and recipes. While as a viewer this might be great content to watch, it's really a reality-check on the privilege so many of us enjoy to be able to eat whatever we want, whenever on most occassions. Contrasting it against communities like these that are pushed to dire extremes just to be able to put a meal on the table, it isn't surprising that micronutrient deficiencies among children, women and households are almost par for the course for so many households across India. A recent study by Vitamin Angels India and UNICEF India, due to be released soon, aims to understand the plethora of reasons that impact consumption behaviours among primary sector worker communities across the country. The hope is to be able to understand communities and their compulsions and choices around food better so that as organizations working in the sector, we can design and implement nutrition interventions that put them and their issues at the core of it. Excited to be sharing the #DietStudy with everyone soon! #CSR #nutrition #diets #consumption #markets #marketequity #discrimination #food #accesstofood #micronutrientdeficiency
