Ritchie Torres’ Post

Congressman for New York's 15th Congressional District

The dramatic perp walk of Luigi Mangione, accompanied by a heavily armed police presence, strikes me as law enforcement theater. Why the need for so much spectacle at so much taxpayer expense? The criminal justice system should treat Luigi Mangione as it would any assassin. Elevating Mangione to a mythical status only serves to deepen his delusions of grandeur.

What’s wrong with theater and spectacle? We all need entertainment. You could argue those resources could be put to better use, but I don’t see where the added taxpayer cost comes from.

Congressman, do you think if we addressed the root cause of the problem that this wouldn’t have happened and the masses wouldn’t be putting him up on a pedestal? Do you think you can do anything to address the root problems facing the millions of Americans that are celebrating him? You’ve got the power, got more power than almost anyone on this platform, can you do anything about it?

The reason for so many cops is half the country wants to "Free Luigi". They were making sure no one showed up to "Free Luigi". It was on the news. Makes sense to me. Watch the news? Luigi's delusions will soon disappear when he gets to Rikers.

With mass media rampant and millions of impressionable young people looking for a cause, no reason to have this murderer paraded around and kept in the limelight. Forget about the cost involved.

Even if it turns out that Luigi is innocent, given the disproportionate resources invested by the police in this case, there is no chance he will get out of it... It would stain the already shaky U.S. judicial system. And if, despite everything, there is even a slight chance he might get out, there will probably be an "accident" in prison. All the evidence in this story contradicts logic and common sense. When Luigi was taken to the Pennsylvania court, he shouted: "Completely unjust" and "an insult to the intelligence of the American people.” I am convinced that's what he was referring to. The evidence and facts are so inconsistent that believing them is utterly stupid.

Congressman Ritchie Torres, c’mon man… I am very appreciative of your service to the nation, HOWEVER, I don't think anyone in Congress has the right to criticize any other government officials waste of taxpayer money until all you guys and gals get your own house in order. Or I should say, Our House.

On point. Healthcare is certainly broken in this country (IMO), but once we start normalizing or even idolizing this way of “fixing” these problems, we fall into a deep, dark hole.

The Governor says crime is down so there are a lot of police with little to do.

With the amount of attention he’s getting and support on social media all precautions had to be taken. Police probably thought people are out there to break him out. It’s also common for high profile crimes.
