𝗟𝗮𝘀𝘁-𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆, 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 This week, as part of my ongoing series on supply chain management, I’m focusing on last-mile delivery, the final step in the logistics journey. While it’s only a small portion of the entire supply chain, the last mile has an outsized impact on customer satisfaction and costs. To quote John Gattorna, author of 𝘋𝘺𝘯𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘤 𝘚𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘭𝘺 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘴: "𝗜𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆’𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝘁𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳." Meeting customer expectations for speed, reliability, and convenience in last-mile delivery has never been more important. However, this final step isn’t without its challenges: 1. 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀: Last-mile delivery accounts for over 50% of overall shipping costs. Factors like fragmented delivery points and failed delivery attempts drive up expenses. 2. 𝗨𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Traffic in urban areas and restricted delivery zones slow down operations, making time-sensitive deliveries more challenging. 3. 𝗖𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: With same-day and next-day delivery becoming the norm, businesses must invest heavily in technology and resources to stay competitive. But it’s not all hurdles, here are some exciting innovations transforming last-mile delivery: • 𝗥𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗹𝗴𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗺𝘀: AI-powered tools can calculate the most efficient delivery routes, reducing fuel consumption and time. • 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗱-𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆: Platforms like Uber for packages are leveraging gig economies to speed up local deliveries. • 𝗗𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗩𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀: Although still emerging, these technologies promise faster and greener deliveries in the future. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁-𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀? What innovative solutions have you seen or implemented? Let’s share strategies for mastering this critical aspect of logistics! Next week, I’ll begin exploring 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, starting with its fundamentals and best practices. Stay tuned!
