Audible has almost 2/3 of the audio book market, so why is Amazon adding audiobooks to Amazon Music? My theories: 1. It's only one audiobook per month; they're trying to upsell consumers to Audible. 2. To set a precedence with the Copyright Royalty Board that an audio book bundle should not cut into publisher payments. 3. Point #2 is to make Spotify look bad. 4. They have a price hike for Amazon Music on the horizon and need to increase the service's offering. Any other ideas? #musicindustry #musicbusiness #streaming

Amazon Music Unlimited has introduced a new perk for its subscribers: one free audiobook each month. This offer, available to users in the US, Canada, and the UK, allows access to Audible's extensive library of over 1 million audiobooks. Subscribers can swap their audiobook choice each month or continue with the same one if unfinished. However, access is lost if the subscription is paused or canceled. The service costs $9.99 monthly for Prime members and $10.99 for non-members, slightly cheaper than Spotify's $11.99 Premium plan. For unlimited audiobook access, users can opt for Audible's $14.95 Premium Plus plan.

"#Spotify announced the expansion of Audiobooks to four new, non-English markets across France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg.  Now, for the first time, eligible Spotify Premium subscribers in those countries will be able to access more than 200,000 audiobook titles as part of their subscriptions. Any title not included in Spotify’s Audiobooks in Premium offering can be purchased "a la carte".  Audiobooks in Premium gives eligible Premium subscribers in these new markets access to 12 hours of monthly audiobook listening time as part of their paid subscription. The catalogue of audiobook titles includes 15,000 in French and 15,000 in Dutch and Flemish, and eligible subscribers can purchase additional 10-hour allocations as top-ups..." #audiolibri

Securing a presence on esteemed platforms such as Audible and iTunes is paramount to #audiobook sales success. Audible is undeniably dominant in the audiobook market and is unlikely to relinquish that stature soon. Attempting to sell audiobooks independently is akin to peddling a new musical composition outside of iTunes—a venture bound to face steep challenges. Doing so would deprive you of these platforms' vast audience, compelling you to shoulder the burden of persuading customers to download directly from your site—an uphill task given the extensive user base of Audible, iTunes, and other services such as Spotify. Free Audiobooks Not Available In Premium Account – Users Claim The free Audiobooks plan for Premium Members was launched recently. When I tried to use it, it said “locked”, and mentioned that I had to pay to access the content. My friends and family are able to listen to the audiobooks for free, but I can’t. If this is why I am locked out, I wonder if it’s because I use the gift card payment option for Spotify (buying the card at the supermarket then entering the code rather than providing my banking details). If that is the case I think it’s unfair, as I still pay for my membership. Audiobooks Continue to Gain Traction on Spotify 📚 📈 After having launched audiobooks as part of the premium proposition in markets like the US, UK or Australia in October last year, the first feedback of our customers is mind-blowing: 25% of eligible Premium users have already engaged with audiobooks. In addition more than half of those users are 18 to 34, which shows that the format is especially appealing to younger listeners. We are also seeing growing engagement in the course of the big TV and film adoptions of famous books on Spotify. The recent video adoptions increased the corresponding book titles including James Clavell’s Shōgun (Hulu), Patricia Highsmith’s “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” (Netflix) and Cixin Liu’s The Three-Body Problem (Netflix) for an average of 470% in consumption.

Spotify has largely abandoned their plans to expand offerings beyond music. Except for audiobooks. And there are a few reasons why: - Audiobooks are a much, much better business. They don't have the onerous royalty payments unlike music. - They attract a different consumer segment. While there are certainly people who consume both, there's evidence of an untapped class of solely audiobook listeners. - It's a nascent space. Amazon (via Audible) has over 60% of the audiobook market share. The space is ripe for some competition. A successful audiobook sector would be a big win for Spotify - and take some pressure of the crushing economics of the music side. #musicindustry #musicbusiness #audio #audiobooks

Spotify US adds new subscription tier to tap into 45% increase in free users engaging with audiobook content. From the Spotify press release: "Since launching Audiobooks in Premium, we’ve seen a 45% increase in free users searching for and interacting with Audiobook content each day. Now we are introducing a new plan option to give our listeners a variety of choices. "Starting today (March 1), the Audiobooks Access Tier provides booklovers in the U.S. with 15 hours of listening from our audiobooks catalog of over 200,000 titles for $9.99 a month." It's still early days for the Spotify Premium experiment, but all signs so far indicate Spotify is having a meaningful impact on the audiobook market. Quite what the new tier hopes to achieve is unclear, being just one dollar lower than the standard Premium rate.
