Microsoft’s $2.2 Billion Mega-Investment Thrusts Malaysia into AI and Cloud Forefront In a major boost to Malaysia’s digital transformation efforts, tech giant Microsoft has announced a massive $2.2 billion investment focused on artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing infrastructure in the Southeast Asian nation. This multi-billion dollar commitment represents Microsoft’s single largest investment in its 32-year history operating in Malaysia. The announcement was made by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella himself during a keynote speech in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday, at the culmination of his three-nation tour of the region that also included stops in Indonesia and Thailand. 'This new generation of AI is reshaping how people live and work everywhere, including in Indonesia,' said Nadella, in Jakarta on the first stop of a tour of Southeast Asia. The investment announced Tuesday will include AI training for 840,000 people, as well as support for Indonesia’s growing community of tech developers. As part of the endeavour, Microsoft also revealed its plans to commit a total investment of US$1.7b over the next four years in new cloud and AI infrastructure as well as AI skilling opportunities for 840,000 individuals in the same country. On the other hand, the company’s commitment to Thailand builds upon its joint vision with the Royal Thai Government to empower the country’s AI-powered future by establishing a new data centre region in the country, AI skilling opportunities for over 100,000 people, as well as support for its developer communities. Following the announcement, Satya Nadella, chairman and chief executive officer at Microsoft, said, “This new generation of AI is reshaping how people live and work everywhere, including in Indonesia. The investments we are announcing today—spanning digital infrastructure, skilling, and support for developers—will help Indonesia thrive in this new era.” Budi Arie Setiadi, minister of communications and information technology at the Republic of Indonesia, also commented, “Indonesia’s collaboration with Microsoft on AI perfectly aligns with our ambition for a future driven by digital innovation.
